Last I checked, looking -only- at BG state polling, and this was a few weeks ago mind you(It was pre-voltron even, I think), Biden's odds were very very slightly better than Bernie's odds.

It is going to be a close election no matter who the nominee would have been, and it is assured to be a popular vote victory for the Democratic nominee.

Now that the primaries are over this topic is half venting and half national/global news. That's the entire purpose of the topic - to contain political opinions from the rest of the board. You don't have to LIKE the rants but they're not any different from the other strong emotions people express here.

I disagree to the extent that the "Trump is bad" stuff typically comes out of discussing some kind of news. The reactions/discussion may end up resulting in "Trump is bad" in the end, but it starts as topical discussion.

LTM's "I'm not voting" schtick is basically the same thing as, say, MetalDK's "Casual revolution" stuff, and he even admits it's just the same thing every time. Like, I'm not even saying he can't do it or anything. I'm just pointing out... Nobody is even debating it with him at this point, so to work himself into a fervor over it just doesn't seem like the wisest use of time.

Well let's be totally clear because I think Hillary voters didn't get it in 2016. If Trump beats Biden, it will be entirely your fault for choosing Biden in the primary. Don't blame Bernie supporters. Don't blame Republicans. Don't blame the elderly. Don't blame young people. Blame people who voted for Hillary/Biden in the primaries. It will be your fault. 100%. Because you could have changed your vote without compromising your principles but you didn't, even though you knew where it would take us.

One thing I see a lot of people not understand is the unemployment insurance part. To my knowledge it is UP TO $600 additional federal insurance to state insurance to make up your full wages if possible. Thus, it may be less than that. Depends on the circumstances of your job.

That $600 a week sounds good. So CA $450 + Federal $600 = $1,050 per week = approx. $4,600 per month for not working. I guess I can probably survive on that if I get laid off?

The means testing on the $1,200 is disappointing. It looks like I'm not getting anything. But honestly, if it's one-time, it's not that much money anyway. The unemployment insurance thing is bigger because I think I could make ends meet on $4,600 a month without tax withholding. I don't think I can on $2,000 a month, which is what the state was providing before this. So that's some more peace of mind for if the economy really is going into Great Depression mode.

It almost seems like a pittance amount because of the expectation. But my fear is that the lack of a result will make UBI an even smaller possibility. You almost have to wonder if it was designed for that.

I think I am reading if you were claimed as a dependent then you cannot claim it. If not, you can file a a tax return tomorrow for your no income or whatever to be eligible.

Once you start giving people something it becomes impossible to take it away. Republicans have campaigned on destroying social security and obamacare for forever.

They've had plenty of chances to do both with no opposing power. They cant do it because they know once you give people something if you take that something away they will show up to the polls and vote you out.

You should benefit to whatever the difference is between your state UE and your normal wage up to $600 more a week.

Oh right. I also want to take this opportunity to point out that for people making more than like 80k, student loan interest is not deductible. I always thought this was absurd - if a company paid for an employee to go to school, the company could deduct that expense from its income. But a student can't deduct interest for loans he took out that got him a job? Really, it would be fair if students could deduct both the interest and the principal, as well as tuition they paid out of pocket, as a business expense.

Generally I don't think the student loan situation is at all unfair to students, and actually income-based repayment is great for students. The problem is with the high tuition. But this tax treatment always felt weird.
