Gov. Phil Murphy vowed Friday to implement more restrictions on New Jersey residents within the next 24 hours, including shutting down nonessential businesses to help fight the coronavirus outbreak as the statewide total hit 890 and is expected to go into the many thousands."


It brings me no joy, but we have no choice. We will, within the next 24 hours, further tighten screws in terms of social distancing, Murphy said during his daily coronavirus press briefing, without providing any details.


Among the measures would be closing all non-essential businesses in the state, Murphy said. The governor said his office is still working out the details to make sure that we get this right and an announcement about the details is likely by Saturday.


This is tough, he said. The only way that were going to beat this darn virus is, literally, if we stay home.


Murphy already instituted sweeping new restrictions in New Jersey to combat the outbreak, including the closure of all public and private schools and the shutdown of casinos, dine-in restaurant service, theaters, gyms, and indoor shopping malls, and a suggested curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
He also has limited public gatherings to no more than 50 people.


But other states have gone further in the last 24 hours, with the governors of California and New York ordering everyone but essential workers to stay home except for emergency and necessary travel to help fight the virus spread.


On Thursday night, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an order requiring people in the state mostly to remain in their homes, except for walks and exercise and for essential needs, like food and medical care. They can still order delivery from restaurants.


On Friday morning, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was putting his state on pause, with only essential businesses staying open and essential workers commuting to their job.


Dr. Perry Halkitis, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health, told NJ Advance Media on Friday that New Jersey has reached the point where a similar stay-at-home order is needed.


The bottom line is: Were in a situation where we live in an epicenter, Halkitis said. "New York, New Jersey, Connecticut are so concentrated, we have to do everything in our power to ameliorate contact as much as possible.


For the most part, people are heeding advice, he added. We may have to be more direct."


Murphy held his briefing from Bergen Community College in Paramus, where the states first government-run testing site opened Friday morning. Thousands of people lined up in cars, and officials started turning away people just after noon.

There's something off about a governor talking about potentially implementing a statewide shutdown and also using "darn" in a sentence. What's tomorrow going to be? "Gee golly this is a pickle, but I've instructed doctors to start turning away the elderly at hospitals so we can triage."

I did it last weekend, because I knew this would happen sooner or later and people would panic buy

Most non-essential stores are already closed here so this basically just ggs all the stores that sell video games

Yeah, it went into effect here in the LA area last night. I haven't gone to work since Sunday and told them I'm not going back for the foreseeable future since my wife has asthma and I can't risk contracting it and giving it to her.

I work in a bank, but Im in the corporate part of it. So I genuinely dont know whats gonna happen next. Im pretty sure banks are considered essential businesses but Im not sure if that just applies to the branches (ours are drive-thru only right now as far as I know)

You can't tell people in the hood to stay put lol, dudes will mob the streets just to spite it

I feel like thats inevitable honestly. We are the most population-dense state in the country. It will spread like wildfire regardless. But shelter in place can spare our hospital system the worst of it.

Anyone who violates the order will have to deal with the consequences.
