I think in general a lot of inserted idioms like these make my eyes roll instead of helping me buy the setting. Really? I feel like I've seen "by the ______" so many times my mind doesn't even register it anymore. "my gods" sounds especially bad because "oh my ______" almost never ends in a plural.
