If we just left it, it would be far far worse.
We will see. If it's truly as resilient, contagious, and deadly as some say then we have already failed. If we cant find a cure then theres no way. Too many people to contain.

You don't think governments all over the world have considered that? What makes you know better than all of them?
What makes you think they know what they're doing when their positions are determined, demonstrably by Trump's lackadaisical initial response, by poll numbers.

They are contained for a little while until it is imported back in. You have to realize that they still get foreigners and some are bound to bring it back.

Because China set a precedent.

Look, just once I'd like to hear some of THESE questions asked at the press conference.

When did patient zero pop up in the US?

How many Americans are REALLY infected? Flu does not count.

Where are they - in which hospitals?

Why were US health authorities FORBIDDEN to test for Covid-19 after the WHO issued an unmistakable red alert in early January?

Why the CDC coronavirus discussions are CLASSIFIED?

Why the coronavirus discussions in the US take place in Sensitive Compartmentalized Information Facilities - which are the domain of Intel and military ops?

But no let's keep asking about "Chinese virus".

This whole thing is a dog and pony show. This virus is H1N1 all over again, and they're playing it up like it is some game-changing pandemic. Maybe if they did their job beforehand it wouldn't have been so bad, but now it is, and nothing, no amount of quarantine is going to stop it.

1)January 27th is when the U.S. first confirmed a case.
2) Flu season is mostly over and we're struggling to produce the test kits needed to test for COVID19(other countries, such as South Korea, have done a much better job at this.) COVID19 has a major symptom not typically caused by influenza: shortness of breath. It is also vastly more lethal.

As for the rest of the post, you ought to, I don't know, actually read some news articles? This has been going on for months now, and there are probably dozens of articles in this very topic. It's spreading across Europe and beginning to hit South America. The rest is answered by Trump initially downplaying it and now he is desperately trying to cover his ass from the political fall-out of that (predictably) terrible mistake.
You should be grateful for our patience in this dark time.

TL;DR : Lurk more.

They aren't answered in news articles because no one is asking those questions. I've been glued to this shit since January and everyone in the media has flipped the switch from running around with their hands over their ears to suddenly thinking the sky is falling.

Just a heads up, the hospital I work at, in MTL (canada), has discharged every non-essential patient from their beds that we were able to. All our negative pressure rooms are ready and we're expecting the worst (which I/We hope it doesn't come down to).
At the very leaat, we're ready for an on slaught.

Also, for the last week, my hospital has quarantine procedures at the front door, and have closed all but four points of entry.

Not even more than 1000 cases nationwide and they've shut the whole place down and spent the last few weeks building up whatever they need

And to be clear, that's half of the 3%, not 1.5% of said group! A number of those people are probably presymptomatic, but nowhere near all. We saw the same type of thing with the ship in japan. After a study of the early cases on board, the ones they were sure were past incubation, it was estimated that at least 18% of cases are totally asymptomatic (think childhood viruses that teens and adults don't normally "get" symptomatically but instead fight off without a full immune alert) and not just presymptomatic. Since that was a worst case, with the average age above ~60, it probably means the true society wide asymptomatic numbers would be higher. As older people tend to get hit harder by this and most children and very young people are usually quite mild or moderate.

Normally this would be really great news as it means all the other rates would need to be lowered. (serious/critical/death rates etc) And it is good news itself.. It's just that in this case, asymptomatic as well as presymptomatic infections are very likely highly infectious.. In some cases days before the first symptoms start with the latter.

It's misleading that they broke it down like that I bet.

First of all, there is a bigger pool of people to draw upon. If 70% of those 80+ are hospitals and 7%% of the 20-54 crowd, then it probably comes out like that.

Also, 40-50 and 50-54 probably encompass a lot of that % anyways.

Sounds like clickbait to me.
