I wish someone could drag realo back to the board for this. There was NOTHING he hyped more than Jay Electronica after Eternal Sunshine (and for good reason).

I hope this doesn't suck!

I can't believe we're living in an era where everything is being delayed/cancelled except for a fucking Jay Electronica album.

Can't wait to listen!

This album is just absolutely incredible. It simultaneously gives me the feeling of mixtape Jay Elec from a decade ago without feeling dated at all. It's fascinating.

Jay-Z was clearly on one too--this might be his best work in 20 years.

I can't even try to rank these yet.

Jay produced half these songs. He had a decade to work with the best producers on the planet and then did the beats himself.

It makes no sense how fantastic this is.

Honestly i thought it was petty great lyrically, but I didn't think the music/beats were nearly as strong.

I'll sit on it for a bit and give it another listen later tonight or tomorrow and see if my initial impressions change

Listened 3 times now. This is the most satisfied I've been by a rap album since good kid maad city. If you know me, that says a lot.

haha what how is this a thing that gets a 20 post topic on B8 in 2020 but we haven't been able to keep a music topic alive for years, you guys surprise me!

I listened to the live stream yesterday with incredible excitement and it sounded... good, I guess? need more listens, but I feel like everyone is pleasantly surprised by this because they totally stopped caring about Jay; I never really did, so it felt... mildly underwhelming, maybe? Jay's a weird one (duh), because despite his reputation he actually does have lots of material out there if you wanna go find it; I'm not convinced this is really up there with his best stuff. and jay-z seemed to do fine but him being all over this rubs me the wrong way somehow. but hey, I'm glad it exists anyway!

listened again this morning and it kinda solidified my initial thoughts: it's definitely an enjoyable and unique project, will probably show up somewhere on my year-end list, but... man, it feels weirdly rushed and unfinished somehow. the mixing is weird, flux capacitor makes no goddamn sense, and Hov being all over it leaves a weird taste in my mouth, like the whole thing was his passion project rather than Jay Elec's (which is entirely possible really).

how many truly great Jay Elec verses are there on here anyway - maybe like four? there are moments where he spins words together in ways that no one else on this planet can, but there are at least a few songs on which he's unremarkable and when he gives up so much running time to Jay-Z and Farrakhan samples that's not ideal at all. Shiny Suit Theory is probably a top three song on this album and that's not even one of the best of the Act II leaks, which says a lot to me.

I'm sorry for focusing on the negatives here - Jay Elec is still one of the best to ever do it and if this marks the start of him actually putting out music then i'll be ecstatic - but this is only feeling like a 7/10 to me right now. sorry man!

Almost all of the negatives you listed are why I adore this. It's supremely weird and uncanny.

Maybe it's because I literally listened to it on an empty subway the first morning the biggest city in the US self-quarantined, but it all just feels spooky and surreal.

The "why in the world did he make this creative decision" moments make me smile. It's hard to explain.

On first listen only songs that stood out to me was Flux Capacitor (I don't like that horn sound though), Blinding (needed like an extra minute of this), and A.P.I.D.T.A. Also, felt more like a Jay-Z album.

We might have to get one started to pass some quarantine free time soon

It is weird to me how much Jay-Z is on here. He's got nothing to prove at this point, you'd think he wouldn't need to step all over the guy's debut record. One or two for clout sure but at some point you gotta just call it a duo or group or something.

After a handful of listens I'm really into the second half. Lovin' Universal Soldier's slack-time drums and weird Chewbacca cries in the background (favorite detail of the album so far). Flux capacitor has a killer vocal sample and the perc. textures/choices are pretty bold. Ezekiel's Wheel goes into a musically bizzare zone I love although it kind of highlights what might be the record's weakness - not enough straight-up rapping and enough of the sparse hooks. But I generally care about the beats more than rapping anyway so that doesn't really bother me much. The closer is such a damn sexy song I couldn't care less what the words are.

I do wish there were more-straight up verses on this record...like Universal Soldier has a 1-minute intro followed by 53 seconds of Jay Electronica, then 40 seconds of Jigga and then the beat just rides for another 2 minutes. And it's a good beat but if I'm really putting on my critic goggles this is a 39-minute record after 13 years and he doesn't have more to say than that? I know grading by stopwatch would be missing the point, maybe the lack of rapping is an artistic choice. But it does leave me wanting.
