Yeah, I got it. It's freaking amazing. I dropped it off at a place this morning to get the ceramic coating put on it, but I should get it back on Saturday.

It's pretty amazing how different driving is when you don't have to pay for gas. I like driving a lot, but having to pay for gas made me drive as little as I possibly could. I've had the car for about a week and a half and I already have 750 miles on it.

It protects the paint and keeps it looking new for much longer. Apparently the paint on Teslas scratches more easily than you'd expect for a car of that price. Not sure of the details on that, but this is my dream car and I was planning to have this done after I got it so I can keep it looking nice as long as possible.

Right now it's about 373 under ideal situations. There's going to be a software update soon to push that up to 390.

If I was to do that, I'd have to pay an electrician to put a 240V outlet somewhere in a garage. I'll have a garage at my apartment building starting in May, but I'm not sure I want to pay to have that done since I can just charge for free down the block.

I'm now reminded of how much it sucks to try to get around town without a car.

So how does the charging station thing work? How long does it need to be there to fill up? Do you guys queue up if someone else is in the spot?

The rate the car charges depends on how full your battery is. If you're close to empty, it'll charge at or near the maximum rate. If you're close to full, then it'll charge slower. The lowest I've let my battery get so far is about 90 miles left out of ~373 miles, and it took about an hour to charge all the way to full. Most of the time, my battery is at about 1/2 to 2/3 full and it takes between 20 and 30 minutes or so to fill up.

Also, in the interest of reducing battery degradation, they recommend only charging the battery up to 80% unless you're going on a long trip, so that shortens the amount of time you need to charge as well. You can set the limit for charging from the display in the car or from the app on your phone. You back into the parking spot and then plug the car in. Both the display on the car and the app on your phone will tell you about how long you have left before you hit your set charging limit.

Also, the mapping application in the main display lets you know how full each charging station is in real time. You can select each supercharging station on the map and it'll say something like 5/8 used, 10/10 used, 3/10 used, etc. If they're all full and you either don't want to go to a different charging station or there isn't one close enough, then you just wait in line. I've seen that this is mostly a problem in places like Los Angeles where there are just a ton of Tesla owners and probably not enough charging stations at times. However, I was in Austin last weekend showing my mom the car and one of the two supercharging stations in town was completely full. I just opted to go to a different one a few miles away.

There are also destination chargers and public charging stations around town. I have a friend I used to work with who has a different electric car that she just uses to commute and she says she pays the City of Austin about $25 every 6 months to use the public chargers every day at work.

I thought 240V was EU standard?
Even if you can, which you could, jack up 120V to 240 in the US, I would be surprised if the cars could handle it.

240V is the same kind of outlet that you'd use for something like a washer/dryer.

You can also charge a Tesla on a 110V outlet, but it just takes a lot longer.

I think it would take about 22 hours to charge from empty to full on a 110V outlet and about 10 hours on a 240V.

It you don't drive very much, then charging on a 110V outlet would be just fine. I think you'd get like 3 miles per hour of charging.

Haha, ya you are right...I just don't have either...so I stopped thinking about it. And my Furnace blower is on 120.....even though it's been broken....For like 3 seasons now.

I do have a 12v solar system which works nicely though!!

I think I've heard it costs about $13 to go from completely empty to a full charge on average, but it depends on electricity costs where you live.

Cool, but I wouldn't get it. The Model 3 would have definitely been a smarter purchase from a financial standpoint. I've felt for a while, from a personal standpoint, that if I'm going to pay for a new car at all, I'm going to get exactly what I want. There are a few things I don't like about the Model 3 and the Model Y has those things, too.

  • I dislike the Model 3's door handles. I don't know if I would ever get used to and start to like the "push the fat, pull the skinny" method of opening the door. The Model S and Model X have much better door handles that will automatically come out when you approach. I believe the X will actually open the driver's side door when you approach, but I've read about problems with that... Like when you're just walking by the car with the key fob, without the intention of getting into it, it will open the door.
  • I dislike the single display on the Model 3. The S and X have the large main center display as well as a display behind the steering wheel.
