Are we, as humans, overreacting, under reacting, or reacting correctly, to the corona virus?

I mean, it's really hard to tell considering the huge differences in information we are getting from countries/sources etc.

Some are reporting almost a 10% fatality rate (like Itally is like 8.7% or something).

Others are saying it's 2% or less.

Pretty much everyone says if it gets out of control (all cases not quaranteened) it will spread very fast everywhere.

I believe we have reached that state in the US at this point.

So yeah, it really depends a too on too many factors. In addition, the symptons can vary so greatly it's crazy. Some people don't even know they get it, or have it, or have a slight runny nose, tt well, obviously death is a pretty severe symptom lol...but there are people who recover but are still suffering damage to lungs etc, pnuemonia etc.

So yeah, not really sure if we are over reacting at this point, or not taking it seriously enough. It's....fairly likely that if it gets out of control a minimum of 2% of the population of our country will probably die, which is 6,000,000 people. If it's anything like Italy though, it could be much worse.

It really depends. I think that the stocking up on supplies that other people might desperately need, for example, is an overreaction. However, it is understandable considering...

The US government is severely underreacting to the situation, and getting caught non-stop lying about the situation is spreading panic because it means people can't really tell how bad the situation is so they're preparing for the worst-case scenario out of terror that they can't trust what the government says/does. But this underreaction from the government has made containment efforts virtually impossible. You have to be decisive right out the gate when it comes to curtailing the spread of disease or you won't be able to curtail it at all. See HIV epidemic for the most obvious example where that failed, because governments treated it as an individual moral failing instead of a public health crisis. The worst possible thing you can do when an outbreak hits is treat it as a political embarrassment that must be downplayed instead of the public health crisis that it is.

Corona virus is a perfect example of how the stock market is not a good idea. Ignorant people overreacting to a fucking cold can throw the world in to recession, it creates volatility when we need stability.

There's really no right answer. It depends on who you are and/or who you know.

If you are or know someone who is elderly or immunocompromised, the panic is warranted as this virus has shown to be quite devastating to those people. Although the small instances of young children with the virus is interesting. I can't remember the name but I saw earlier that we have a board member whose wife is on dialysis. In that case, he has every right to be hyperalert about this virus and every other illness really.

If you and the people you know are in generally good health, then the panic is largely unnecessary.

Not nearly worried enough. It could have probably been almost entirely prevented from entering the US if they had reacted more quickly and harshly and the cost could easily be 10 million US lives. I think most people don't realize that the normal flu is actually pretty bad. It still kills over 1% of the people that get it. A super flu that no one has immunity to that spreads before it shows symptoms is actually a big fucking deal. You can also bet health resources being taxed to deal with it will result in other people dying of other causes.

It's not the kind of disease thats likely to end the human race, but it's going to kill a whole lot of people at this rate, probably in the 10s of millions worldwide.

A lot of people dont seem to realize how far reaching the effects of the virus might be

As an individual your risk of dying or being seriously ill might be very low, but there are enough vulnerable people in society that hospitals and care centers could very quickly reach their capacity and then it becomes hard to get healthcare for just about anything even if it is unrelated to the pandemic

then on the financial side you have all these major events being cancelled left and right which is going to hurt too many small businesses, local communities, and large companies to count. I cant even imagine how much capital is gonna be lost by refusing any goods from Europe for 30 days.

Nobody should be running around like the sky is falling because things arent gonna be like the movies, but what happens over the next few months could very well have a major effect on the rest of our lives.

For perspective - if no one takes any containment efforts at all and the disease spreads worldwide - you're looking at the total disappearance of several low population countries... such as RUSSIA (by numbers, obviously the damage will also be dispersed globally)
