Current Events > As a Costco employee, this was my toilet paper experience today.

We had probably ten or so pallets of TP just arrived right before the store opens. 30 to a pallet. I just came back from holidays so i had only read about this TP craze.

5 mins to opening. There's probably 15 to 20 employees including me standing in front of all the TP like a company of soldiers. Im thinking to myself, is this really necessary? How nuts could it be?

Store opens. People are fucking SPRINTING in a beeline towards the TP. In probably 40 seconds the entire aisle is filled with a tsunami of carts and people. We're told to only give them a max of 2. Packages are flying all over the place, employees are running all over filling the carts so it doesnt get too clogged but then customers are yelling at other customers they cant get out, move, hey that was mine etc.

People are volatile over being told they can only have two.

One guy is shooting a video on his phone of this mass hysteria (like 5 employees are doing the same)

One woman complains to us about the customer taking the video of her and everyone else, she blows up when we tell her we can't do anything about it.

In EASILY ten minutes, the entire stock is gone.

I thought i knew what to expect - lol, holy shit. Absolute fucking craziness.

Tl;dr - lol people

EDIT - There was a guy outside immediatly after it was gone trying to pawn it off on people for double the price until he got shooed away.

Well you could have done something. Costco is private property, and you can force people to not record, or remove them from the premise.

I only heard about this afterward. She apparently spoke to a manager in the thick of it, who just wanted everybody to keep moving so it sounds like it was a really short conversation lol

I said 'us' because again, there was like 15 or 20 of us running all over the place.

I bought a single 24 pack of Walmart's ultra soft mega-rolls (the package says it's the equivalent of 96 rolls but idk toilet paper math confuses me) and that should last our house a few months at least.

Catch the virus, you're told to stay inside, self-isolate. If you live in an area that might get quarantined...

Bulk buying TP is for the real chance that you might have to stay inside for a duration of time.

You should stand in the toilet paper aisle and loudly speak into your cellphone about how theres a ton of toilet paper in this store, express how its running out everywhere else and to get everyone down there now to grab it up before its gone.

Or or just rush in there and fill up your cart like a maniac and rush out like youre in the middle of a toilet paper riot, even though nothing is out of the ordinary.

I haven't been to Costco or Walmart in a while, but I've heard Walmarts are being raided pretty hard, too. I just shop at my local Albertson's, they have plenty of toilet paper last I saw, but they were almost completely out of hand sanitizers. Home Depot had toilet paper, too, but they were charging double the price for them.

I kind of understand the fear of quarantine, but I don't understand buying SO MUCH toilet paper instead of anything else, like canned food or cereals. I mean, if you run out of TP you can still wash your ass, it's not vital to the existence of mankind.

If you get stuck inside due to quarantine and run out of toilet paper it's gonna be a rough time

I doubt it's because people expect to be quarantined with no way to buy toilet paper, otherwise they'd be stocking up on food too. More likely it's a self-perpetuating thing that started with a few morons, then other people started seeing a shortage and were like "oh shit I need to buy this or else I won't be able to later" and so on. It's not a panic that has any rationale behind it

I just talked to a customer whose daughter works at Walmart. She said at the Walmart she's at, the TP stock is backordered to hell for a total of three months.

Three months of no TP at Walmart.

At Home Depot we've been out of face masks and respirators for like 2 and a half weeks. And any shipment we do get is in small amounts and snatched up quickly.

And we get people asking when we're getting more as if some lowly associate is going to be up to speed on the exact shipment dates of everything. We even had an asian dude come in and act all surprised when I told him we were out. Had the fucking nerve to ask why. Yeah, like I'm gonna believe you aren't already aware.
