I hate when I hear things like "Greg's boyfriend was in a car accident," my first thought is "I didn't know Greg was gay."
Growing up conservative, I've been conditioned to look down on homosexual relationships. Say what you will about where you stand on the topic, I'm tired of it getting in the way of seeing the actual human beings. My first thought should have been "Is he ok?"
And then I had the nerve to tell someone else, but I worded it like this, hoping to get the same reaction I got: "Greg's BOYfriend was in a car accident." I received the correct reaction and recognized that I was the insensitive one.

I grew up conservative too, and its really difficult to kick that thought process. It took me about two years of actively addressing those thoughts and questioning it til I stopped thinking about it.

It was similar with race too. When talking to a white person, my first thought was on them as a person. For any other race, my first thought was about their ethnicity.

Ive improved myself, and you can too. Keep it up :)

Republicans are a bizarre unholy marriage of bible-thumpers and Rand-quoters. The party needs a shakedown, quite badly.

Just because youre a republican doesnt mean youre an evangelical. I prefer small government and the rights of the individual, whether its to own a rifle, or marry your black boyfriend when youre a white man. Thanks for realizing that your conservatism sucks.

I do not see that TC posits the conjecture that you are suggesting. I see TC as saying a conservative viewpoint lends itself to bias around nonconventional relations; and that introspection can make one conscious of this bias allowing them to be more sensitive to the human condition while (still) holding said viewpoints.
