A local theater was showing movies from the Heartland Film Festival and it happened to be one of them. The program was scheduled before it won the Oscar for Best Picture. It's ascension to Best Picture status did insure though that the movie was a sellout.

First off, it was a really good movie. It's shades of Quentin Tarantino and Alfred Hitchcock and it has a wicked sense of humor that is not lost in translation. Second, Joker was head and shoulders above this movie. I'm not trying to be negative. I just had to throw that out there. That's okay though. It was still a fun experience getting to see the current Best Picture winner in a theater. It's like getting to ride a new ride at a theme park. And I don't begrudge it winning like I do certain other "Best" Pictures.

I also saw We Shall Not Die Now. 10/10 documentary. Highly, highly recommended. As for Parasite, if you haven't already, do see it if and when you get the chance. It's a fun and engaging movie experience.

This is not only a fantastic pun but a great callback to the family stinking in Parasite.

Yeah, I'm not backing down from that opinion.

Joker gave a portrait of an individual and weaved subtle commentary into the fabric of the picture. Parasite took the Epic Theater approach of emotionally distancing the audience from the characters in order to call attention to the underling issues. I respect what they did with the choices they made, but I'm gonna give the character study the nod over emotionally distant stock characters nine times out of ten. When it came to the use of violence for punctuation or shock value, Joker handled that better too.

That said, I can't blame them. I'd have probably voted for Parasite too had I been on the committee. If I'd sold my soul to become a professional judge of quality cinema, I wouldn't want to be the guy who nominated a "comic book movie" over a brilliantly crafted foreign film filled with social commentary that is relevant here in the US as well as South Korea.

It *is* a great movie. It's just not the best one made last year.
