Got a good 17-18 years out of it, but it wont read the discs anymore. Tried cleaning the lens and everything to no avail. Now I have to use the Wii to play them which just isnt the same. On the plus side my SNES and N64 are still going strong.

:(

I still have mine, but haven't hooked it up in ages

Replacing it would suck, and I have a bunch of US imports that won't work on my Wii. The import disc doesn't work on it.

My Gamecube and Wii stopped reading discs years ago. I took my GC everywhere (vacations, friends and relatives houses, etc.) and I might have been rough with it at times. But my Wii was always at home and taken care of but it lasted even less time than my GC.

You can replace the lens with a new lens. There are tutorials online (videos, written guides, etc) that can help you do this and a new lens and the tools needed can be bought on ebay.

It kind of is though. I love the way that backwards compatibility works on the Wii. Only annoying part is that you still need to use a Wii remote to start up the disc channel.

Depends on what you want. No Gameboy Player, no third party discs (Action Replay, Free Loader, etc). I'm not sure online enabled Gamecube games can do so on Wii, though given they all are officially shut down, that probably doesn't matter. Did Gamecube have unofficial online support for Phantasy Star Online?

I know for me, a Wii wouldn't be acceptable, most of my games need the Free Loader. :(

^THIS.
Fixing a Gamecube isn't hard at all. Anyone can do it with the proper guidance and tools.

Do it! Old tube TVs are best for old gaming. That lack of latency is king and s video is such a nice video quality for them.

My Game Cube is still going, though it struggles a bit from time to time. Should be celebrating its 17th birthday this year.

Personally when we had the cart based games, I hardly ever had any trouble with the console not loading games and then when they went to cds and dvds. nothing but issues.

Introducing moving parts will produce mechanical errors.
Both drives and slots bite when they wear down. I feel more helpless with cart slots though. With CD drives, I can make minor adjustments to the pot or something if errors start to arise.
