Back when Lucas still ran things. It was conceived as a unique way to do a sequel while bridging the films and the EU content.

Would've focused on Ben Skywalker trying to take down Jacen Solo

All I can think of though is remember when Star Wars had videogames at least once or twice a year from multiple developers...

They should have just adapted the Thrawn Trilogy. It's perfect for a sequel trilogy.

This and also the main actors are several decades older than they are in the books

Not everyone would have read the books.

This and also the main actors are several decades older than they are in the books
Just adjust the age so the Thrawn Trilogy takes place 30 years after RotJ instead of only 5.

Doesn't matter, the entire thing would still be out there from the start. You'd basically have to change almost everything to avoid it.
