So I turned it on, it was working fine , I was scrolling the menus and stuff. And as per usual there's an update. Every time I turn it on there's an update. So I downloaded it, it installed, then my PS4 stopped displaying. It's just a black screen now. I can hear music but it's very cut off. Few seconds of music, then few seconds of silence, and so on. I thought maybe it was my HDMI and I switched it but it's also doing the same thing. Everything seems to be connected in the ports alright. I tried to boot it up in safe mode but nothing is coming up either. Could it be the update? Could it be something else?

Updating is a definite hazard for all types of computer electronics. My last phone just failed after getting stuck on an update.

I don't suppose it's under warranty? Sony charges a lot for repairs out of warranty. With the PS5 coming with probable backwards compatibility, it might not be worth it to pay for repairs or a replacement, but that depends on your plans.

I had this same issue, kinda sorta. Thought it was a faulty HDMI. But that wasnt it. Almost called to turn in my tv with the warranty but wanted to see if my TV had a new firmware update, and after searching for it and going that route my TV just started displaying stuff again, like nothing happened.

This mat not be of any help to you but I tried connecting my PS4 with a different HDMI, into different ports, but the ONLY thing that would work was my Switch. It was so bizarre. Still dont know what caused it but Im glad it fixed itself.

I tried following this fuckboys advice, the video Drew me in because I have the same PS4. The only problem is he also suggests going into safe mode. his TV displays it, mine doesn't. My PS4 is still functional, it just doesn't show anything. So i actually carefully followed what he did, even though I'm blind on my end. Like going down twice to select the second option and hitting x twice to select It and confirm it.

It still didn't work

My TV is more than 10 years old so I doubt there's any firmware updates on it

It's probably not related but it sounds like the issue I had to send my Vita in for. Like, there was sound and control but the screen wouldn't turn on. But that's a handheld with its own screen.

.......

I'm pretty bad with technology , but I do know some basic troubleshooting stuff. I work in retail after all

Turning the tv on and off, the ps4, unplugging it for several seconds

Etc

But uh....I dunno what compelled me to do this, but I just simply turned the tv off a second time and that did the trick >_>

God I hate technology

sometimes the problem with the HDMI is further down the line and that's sounds like what happened here.

I had this exact same problem a few weeks ago. I literally just turned off my PS4, and then unplugged and re-plugged the power cord and HDMI cable, and it worked again. Amazing how it does that!
