Disney tested the film thoroughly with Chinese audiences, including its own local executives. In an early version, Mulan kissed love interest Chen Honghui (Yoson An) on a bridge when they were about to part. "It was very beautiful, but the China office went, 'No, you can't, that doesn't feel right to the Chinese people,' " says Caro. "So we took it out."

It's not a musical and Mushu isn't in it. It's straight drama-adventure.

Seeing as how many of the Live Action movies had crappy renditions of the Animated Musical songs, I'm kind of happy that they're not doing it. Last thing we need is more butchered versions of the songs. The problem is that I don't think the live action Mulan movie has anything else that can carry the movie.

Honestly, Disney needs this film more than it needs another musical or another comedy.

The original film was an Eddie Murphy vehicle. He's the character the audience gravitated toward. In Disney's first and thus far only animated movie about an action heroine, the talking lizard is the character you left the film remembering. (Don't try to deny it.)

Look, I'm gonna miss Mushu as much as anybody. But this is an opportunity to do something sincere. As woke as they are now, Disney is still seemingly hesitant to have women in capable combat roles. And Asian women are desperately underrepresented in Hollywood -- aside from the occasional white guy's girlfriend. I hope this film proves successful and opens up new doors.

Hollywood is getting better about representation. I hope this film is the next link in that chain.

For the record, the Chinese government does not like movies set in the past. The people aren't supposed to reminisce about the good old days. They're supposed to appreciate how much better life is under communism than it was under the emperors.

If this is China-baiting, they're already fishing in the wrong pond.

Yeah, that was the main reason I hated about Lion King and Aladdin live action. It was the literal same movie, except done in an inferior way. The whole time I kept watching, I was going "man the animated movie did this part so much better". I'm glad they're trying to do something different and I'm hoping Disney is going to continue taking more risks. The MCU movie got consistently better as they started to deviate from the typical safe MCU formula and got better villains in their movies. If you make it live action, make it something different. And you're right about the animated movie being a Eddie Murphy fuel, most of us only remember it for Mushu and not really for Mulan... which probably brings up my other fear for this movie. I really hope they do a good job with her character because she needs to carry the movie on her own or it might turn into a disaster.

So Disney, making a movie about a Chinese character, decided to ask how actual Chinese people think of their representation in media they consume as much as us.

Okay yeah that's fine.

Not 100% accurate. Movies about the past are encouraged as long as they justify the modern China.

Jet Li's Hero is effectively a 2 hour justification of the most brutal autocrat ever to rule China and a justification of the One China Policy. Jet Li's fearless is a movie about folk hero and nationalist pin up legend Huo Yuanjia.

I don't care at all for this film, but I hate pandering to China in production. If you want to edit a game or movie solely for the Chinese market, go right ahead, but don't cripple creative freedom just to get the Chinabucks. It's dumb.

Mushu was for kids.

The meat of the story was a beautiful yet complicated family relationship and defying preconceptions. The parallels between Mulan and Babe are surprisingly large. I'm hoping they focus more on those aspects. I'm actually pretty hyped to see what they do.

Hell, I was a kid and I still never gave a shit about Mushu. If anything, I usually found those kinds of characters obnoxious. Aladdin was another of my favorites, and I wasn't a fan of Genie either. I (shockingly) liked the title characters of those movies most.
