I'm inclined to agree.

I played it a second time without the side-missions, and I enjoyed it a lot more.

also, it's easily the best, if you include mission 51, but without it, it feels incomplete, but I still prefer it to the rest of the series, narrative included.

and as far as Snakes go, Venom is my second favorite after Solid.

It's not. The gameplay is the most refined, by far, but it's also a little too refined. It lacks the charm of earlier entries. As a random stealth game, it's top notch, but as a MGS game, it's missing a lot of crucial aspects.

The story is too disjointed and unimportant. Probably 75%+ of the missions are filler that should have been side missions instead. The 'side missions' are more like the scattered collectibles of Assassin's Creed or Spider-Man.

If you play Ground Zeroes, you get a sense of what Phantom Pain should have been. The main story mission in GZ has a large number of cutscenes, lots of dialogue, and some really important events. Meanwhile, the side missions each have their own premise, their own objectives, their own dialogue, etc.

Each of the Ground Zeroes side missions could have passed as a "main mission" in Phantom Pain.

MGSV:PP was obviously incomplete.

But MGS5 was set in the most awkward time period in the whole series and connects dots in the worst way to make things align currently

If judging by today's standards, if at their release relative to their peers 1 moves up to 2nd and the rest stay the same. The controls of mgs1 make me have significantly less fun after mgs3. It's like playing persona 3 after p4 gave full party control.

4 is my top. It gets by a lot on fanservice and nostalgia-pandering, but it does it well and the gameplay surrounding it is amazing. MGSV has the gameplay but completely botched the fanservice.

No, my argument is that it's completely different from previous games and has very little in common with what made MGS such an engrossing series. There's no classic radar, the detection system is totally different, codec calls are replaced by radio transmissions that play in the background instead (and cassette tapes, which suck).

A lot of those changes can be seen as "improvements" but it's really not the same series anymore. It has a couple of animations in common, but that's about it. MGSV plays more like a competitor to MGS than an actual MGS title.
