How did the purse even managed to get there? Maybe someone took it and tried to hide it.

15 dollars. US Currency has never been renumerated. A 5 dollar silver certificate for instance is still worth 5 dollars over 100 years after it was produced, even though it's obsolete. And half cents are still worth half a cent. You'd be a complete idiot to spend either of them at face value rather than sell them on the collector's market, but the US Government only backs the face value.

i dont think thats what hes asking.

15 dollars in the 50s had a lot more spending power than today. For example i think candy bars were like 5 cents back then compared to over a dollar today

Another example In the year 1957, the average retail price of gas in the U.S. was $0.31. This is equivalent to $2.82 in 2019 dollars.

The problem with his question is that if there's 15 dollars in US currency in that purse, it has the same spending value. Spending power is different yes, but it has the same value per US law.

While everyone is correct in that $15 cash would still be worth $15 today, the answer to the heart of your question is that $15 in 1957 would be worth roughly $140 today:

More accurately $140 is only worth $15. Candy bars arent more expensive now (worth more), the money is worth less, takes more to buy the same candy bar.
