I don't understand how dumb you can be to not understand that tax brackets are not retroactive to income earned before reaching them.

Like, I get that that info is not inherent in the terminology used on the matter, but how dumb do you have to be for your reaction to be "oh they reach back and take income you previously did not have to pay [as much] taxes on if you earn one dollar above the bracket" rather than "no, that would be stupid, I should research this and educate myself."

the thing that's actually dumb here is that, even if that was the tax rate, they'd be making more than post-tax minimum wage currently

and they'd have health care, which minimum wage employees don't have now.

The biggest issue I see here is that the dude doesn't understand how tax rates actually work. If a 52% tax was applied to $29K+ it would mean that only $2,200 is being taxed at 52%.

Basic finance should be taught in school, too many people don't even understand how tax brackets work. I've seen idiots who think that getting a raise at work can be bad if it takes you into the next tax bracket, lol.

Bernie always dodges questions when ask about the negative impact of his policies on the lower and middle class.

Even if it is just 52% of anything in excess of minimum wage, that's still ridiculous. People making 32k a year can barely afford housing. They're not living in luxury. If you taxed people making say 150k a year at that rate, maybe. Bernie gets a lot of credit, but hes still a politician with a six figure salary for the last 20+ years that doesnt understand what it's like living in these margins.

52% is for people making more than $10 million

32k would be 16%, which is 4% higher than it is now but they'd have healthcare. When I was making that much when I started this job my health insurance was about 11% of my check and I still had to pay copays and for treatments and prescriptions and shit. I'd gladly pay an extra 4% in taxes if it got rid of all that shit.

Could you or someone else reading this explain it for me please? I have never dealt with taxes so I am curious on how it works. You dont have to go into great detail just an example with made up easy to calculate numbers would be fine.

These are made up numbers btw

Take $29,000

That amount and under you pay 12%

Anything over you pay 16%, so you'd pay 16% on $6000 if you made $35,000

Gotta go for now though but that's the basic gist

So if someone makes $15,000,000/year under Bernie they'd pay $2,600,000 in taxes on the additional $5,000,000 they made over $10,000,000 since its a 52% tax over $10,000,000

Thank you all!

Ok if I have this straight it taxes each amount bracket sequentially like

0-10,000 10%
10,001-20,000 20%
20,001-30,000 30%

so if you made lets say 22,000 that would be

1,000 from bracket 1
2.000 from bracket 2 (rounded up)
and 600 from bracket 3 for a total of 3,600 instead of 6,600 if it was the total amount cumulatively.

I'm just going off the information being presented here. Tmaster148 said it was 52% on income above 29k and nobody was calling him out. I made my post and Tired-Insomniac came in and corrected me with evidence and logic and I do appreciate that information. I'd already learned the error of my ways before your "get some education" post.

Presumably it's about the person not understanding how tax brackets work, and assuming that a person will be taxed 52% on *all* earned income. Also not understanding (or perhaps intentionally ignoring?) basic concepts like deductions and credits...
