How the fuck do people play multiplayer games on wifi, man?

My house isn't even wired for it either, running Ethernet from my router into a coaxial cable into my room then back to an Ethernet cable. Had to buy adapters for it but so worth it.

because that looks awful and would have to go through the living room and up the stairs and that's not really an option

Gotta love how you pretty much have to give up and go do something else if someone turns on the microwave when you're on wifi. What idiot thought it would be a good idea to use the same frequency as microwaves.

I've never noticed many differance for a time when I switched over to ethernet.

I've got Google Fiber so my speeds are 2 to 3 times what they were over wifi lol

But also network instability and lag are near eliminated, FPS games have felt significantly better so far

No, I didn't actually touch the cables in the walls or install anything, just router -> adapter -> coax port and then each room (only my bedroom with PC and games right now) does coax port -> adapter -> PC. Odered more Ethernet cables that are coming today, so I can plug everything in the room in to a switch and plug the switch to the adapter.

okay I think I'm with you but to clarify, the coax port were already installed so it was easier to use those than run the long cable behind the walls ect. ? That would make perfect sense. I thought maybe there was a technical reason for it.

Right. My house when built was wired for cable but not ethernet. So for those in a similar situation, this is an option if you're sick of dealing with bad wifi.

I assume dude has some preinstalled cabling in his house for tv or something. No idea on how efficient it is to convert to Eth to Coax and back though.Probably need some sort of modulator.

I almost went with Powerline adapters instead! But did some reading and it sounded a bit more iffy on how well it would work plus the potential speeds and it sounded like it wouldn't be nearly as good.

I get up to 2 Mb/s down, which is enough for me

I'd happily lay an Ethernet cable down but it'd be too long. Plus I can't put it in the walls due to the landlord probably getting annoyed

Before I got into competitive Smash 64 (where we play with zero-delay CRTs) and networking I was doing shit like connecting my consoles to the living-room TV wirelessly and dealing with seconds of input delay. Or getting not even half the speed we're provisioned for on my PC. It was awful, and I wish I'd seen the light sooner. Ethernet 5ever.

That sounds awful, lol. I've tried to remote play single player games from my desktop to my laptop over two different wireless networks and I made it about 2 minutes, the delay and pixelation was just too much for me to deal with.

What is the latency like? I feel thats a more important metric than pure bandwidth.

I have a 100 foot ethernet cord connected from my living room all the way into my basement I taped the wire all along the roof and wall I dont care how bad it looks

I'm on a Range Extender that's connected to from the main WiFi Router.

The 5.0 GHz spectrum is my dedicated frequency / connection between WiFi Router and Range Extender.

I just leave 2.4 GHz spectrum is only for local device connections.

As a former cable tech, Im mildly impressed that you got a MoCA system working on your own.

Did you do anything with the coax configuration/splitters or did it just work out without any special effort?

Yeah, that was a bit shocking. Not sure if cable or the fact the laptop uses one of those USB Ethernet adapters or if it's just that much degredation. Either way, like I said I've never had issues streaming video or Xbox live. /shrug

Well the benefit is having the option of both. I wouldn't host a game on a wi-fi network, but I had to live in the worse fucking apt ever afterwhile with shit wired network b/c nuclear family for reasons for the longest time (ramble deleted). It somehow did host Diablo 1 joins but it was complicated AF and I did a lot of for work that, but seriously while I did, the amount of ppl wanting to legit play Diablo 1 over battlenet while Diablo 3 was fresh was rare. But a weird mind trip back to 1996 when I was still legit happy.

tldr

I downloaded 8 gigs off PSN in like 5 minutes off wi-fi at new apt. Sometimes the new age is nice to you.
