Hiding and fudging the actual numbers is going to be the reason this gets real bad if it reaches that point. I'll never understand why countries facing serious outbreaks do this. I'm sure they have reasons that sound good for a short-term but big picture it helps no one.

Well, Hawaii is doing this because tourism is like the biggest economic driver of the state, and would die if news spreads that the state is infected.

Not sure how officials can claim 0 cases when we have no test kits, haven't sent any samples to the CDC for testing, had 8 doctor-referred suspected cases be ignored because it didn't "meet criteria", had a Japanese tourist who was identified as being positive for Corona once he returned home ill to Japan a day later, etc.

the fearmongering over a virus with less than 2% death rate is ridiculous here. In reality a lot more people are probably sick with it who won't die. The rate is probably less than 1%.

I really don't think you appreciate the gravity of the situation if you actually believe this. If you were one of the people being forced to stay in your house until the government says you can leave, you would be singing a different tune.

If it truly is too early to tell how serious it is, than how can one be so dismissive of people's concerns given the overall activity of the virus and its deaths, government responses, stock market impact, and the many health experts advising just how serious this is?

Reminder: the death rate isn't the only thing to focus on in gauging how "serious" this is.

btw i don't disagree with the government saying for people to stay in their houses. in fact it's probably good to be on the safe side and quarantine areas that turn up positive for coronavirus

what i'm arguing against is fearmongering by some ppl on this board by posting unverified stories, tweets and reports overstating the danger. e.g saying that the world economy will collaspe by march and other doomsday theories. as i posted, it is too early to tell if it is a serious threat of those magnitudes

Afaik the death ratio of people who completely went through the illness in China is almost 10%. As in, that's how bad it is if you exclude people who didn't have the time to fight off the virus yet and may die in a week.

Just saying that the 2% death ratio may be lower if you include the "invisible" lenient symptom cases, but it also may be far higher if you don't use the wrong numbers in your calculations.

There's a good reason it's called sars-2.
