Which is why WRPG are generally better than JRPG since videogame stories at their best are the equivalent of watching a 6/10 imdb rated B-movie

Yes, you are wrong. JRPGs are about playing a character with a pre-defined role and story. WRPGs are about creating your own character, story and role.

More on-rails (few alternative side quests, the world is hard locked, you either have the mcguffin key to progress or you don't) vs open world (a lot of the world is potentially open to you, soft barriers (hard enemies) are the biggest blocker)

Planescape: Torment blows just about every single JRPG out of the water in being writing and story driven.

That's probably a better way of putting it, more DnD like.

and you're also a teenager who can beat up on seasoned veterans and millennia-old eldritch abominations for some reason, and you're the prophesized one who is the only one who can beat the dark unimaginable evil force that wants to destroy the world for no apparent reason

we just described every single JRPG that has ever existed

This is why Lightning is the best

The way Extra Credits put it, JRPGs are more about story while WRPGs are more about fantasy--not necessarily fantasy as in dragons and stuff, but fantasy as in self-insertion, player agency, etc.

Which I find is really pretty true.

Why do JRPG stories suck while WRPG gameplay is a pain in the ass?

Actually, its a lie. I like JRPG stories.

I can't stand JRPGs. The stories are always so cookie-cutter and the characters are bland and predictable.

Though most modern WRPGs try to do too much as far as game mechanics and only succeed in achieving maybe half of them.

more realistic and/or serious story driven

This actually kinda describes Genealogy of the Holy War's plot, give it a try sometime. No I'm serious. It's basically Volsunga Saga run through a 90s anime filter. One of my favorite games of all time mostly on the strength of its story.
