I just started playing AAI1 again and I'm having A LOT more fun this time around, now that I haven't recently played the 6 main games in quick succession. Stuff like Gumshoe's and Franziska's quirks feel more tolerable now and I'm not constantly comparing this game to the others.

I remember hating the fuck out of I1-1 the first time and now I liked it. The villain is actually pretty decent, might be better than most games' first case villains. He just needed fewer coat moving animations, I guess.

I1-2 feels a little to too slow, though. You have to defend yourself against a whopping 3 different people and that's kind of repetitive. Though it has a good plot and some good characters, other than Lablanc (then again, Lablanc gives us that epic falling scene and a good efeat animation).

Also liking how this game has a thing where is slowly builds the main mystery bit by bit every case. AA3, 4 and 6 attempted that, but not with every case like this one.

The main problem is that debates just don't feel as exciting as trials. There is something about the lack of tension that makes the whole thing a little more chore-y. Maybe later cases will improve that somehow.

And I keep saying that every time, but the soundtrack is an absolute 10/10 and makes the boring parts more fun to play.

Last time I only beat the first 2 cases. Now I just finished those two cases again. Let's see what happens next.

Not sure if I'm gonna make this a playthrough thread because I'm kind of burned out from the Danganronpa one. Also I think I've already learned the identities of every killer in this game by reading other B8 threads back in 2016. I did forget their names after all this time, but I might remember them when I see them.

But maybe I'll post my after-case thoughts here, if this thread doesn't purge.

I gotta say, if one thing kept this game in my head after all this time and made me want to try again, was the promise that AAI2 is amazing. Otherwise I might not even bothered. Let's see if the ride will be worth it. And the last 3 cases of the first game, too.

Most people really don't like the third case, but I think it's a bit underrated.

Ok I've finally finished E1-3.

Actual impressions:

FIrst of all, Kay Faraday. She's a Maya clone, all right. Perhaps even more of a clone than the other ones, I couldn't notice any differences in personality besides the stuff about thievery. But only now I've realized how much this game needed a Maya. Miles doesn't have quite the same chemistry with her as Phoenix/Maya do, but we needed an assistant that is actually on our side, is not a complete idiot and says funny things often. She makes this case more enjoyable for those reasons.

The case itself is pretty good. A little too long too, but the setup is cool. I liked how it plays around with different locations.

The cast is a mixed bag. I really disliked Lang, he's basically Nahyuta with a lower IQ, and IQ was Nahyuta's redeeming quality to being with. The end of the case suggests a more nuanced character, but so far he's just a jerk who likes to arrest people without evidence and relies on his army to do what his average intelligence can't.

The Amanos are all right, Lance is not a great villain but not particularly annoying, his father is a smily asshole that is fun to take down. Lauren Paups is basically the prequel of the girl from 6-6, but she's funny enough. Ema is in this case but she's a glorified cameo. Oldbag and Meekins are in this case and they didn't need to.

The case flows better than 1-2 because you don't have to defend yourself every 5 minutes. You do defend a few other people but that's more of a second mission to the main goal of finding the truth. I gotta say though, the game is really forcing excuses to have Miles play defense. 1-1 relied on obviously innocent people being accused, 1-2 on Miles himself, and 1-3 on the cop being a fascist jerk. Miles believing in Lauren and not inALance for no specific reason is still king of forced, though.

It's the best case so far, mostly thanks to Kay. That said, the most fun opponent to debate so far has been Portsman, and that's not exactly a good sign. I feel like this was a step up in difficulty compared to the first too though, so it was pretty fun.

I will never understand why they decided to bring back Meekins for multiple games

He's not the most fun character to interact with but literally buying the crime scene was the kind of stonks play that makes me love this series.

Edgeworth doesn't play "Prosecutor" so much as "Pursuer of Truth"... Its only natural that at times he would find himself defending people.

Nah man, the series lacked somebody who could really point at Edgeworth and expose how ridiculously he acts like sometimes.

And we didn't have that because everyone was either inferior to him (i. e. Franziska) or too nice to pull it off (i. e. Phoenix).

I now want to see a case where one of Edgeworth or Blackquill can play defense against the other. I think Blackquill could actually pull this off, too.

Calisto Yew is my least favorite character in the entire franchise.
