The game's setting was a comic book in which you interacted with your environment, up to and including ripping pages, and faced opponents who were hand-drawn by your nemesis. The sound and visuals were top notch and the comic bubble dialogue allowed greater characterization and interaction than had been attempted up to that point.

It pushed the Sega Genesis to the absolute limit. Unfortunately, something had to give. Because the sound, visuals, and interactive mechanics ate up so much cartridge space, they had to come up with cheap ways of preventing you from beating the game on a two-day rental.

First, they stiffed you with a Game Over after a single death. Second, the whole game is an endurance test as anything you do or don't do will slowly drain your health. You lose health punching your way through unavoidable obstacles and enemies will hold on indefinitely to get just one shot in to drain the tiniest bit of health. It's not challenging in the same way as something like Contra or Ninja Gaiden. It's more like trying to hold your piss when you really, really need to go.

Another flaw too is that they tried to get a bit ambitious with the fighting mechanics. You go into this game expecting beat 'em up style combat and it's really like playing a platformer in which every enemy is a microcosm of a one on one fighting game opponent. You can't feasibly have a system of complex controls and combinations in a game which has ONE attack button. I managed to tough it out and beat the game, and my opinion of the game has gone up during that time, but I think most players quit before completing the first episode or shortly thereafter. And that's really too early in the game to weed out the players who aren't committed to beating it.

I knew it was an awesome game despite the horrendous difficulty.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty bad game imo despite the promise and excellent production

I do think they could've simplified the fighting mechanics a bit and let players go with Double Dragon style three lives, no continues, no potential to gain extra lives. There's still strategy in dodging enemy projectiles and learning attack patterns. I don't think they really needed to program enemies to block 80% of your attacks to try and get you to learn difficult fighting combinations.

The game was really good except for the difficulty. I think I made it to the second stage like once or twice. Pretty sure there wasn't any useful passwords either.

I gave this the effort a few times but never made it far. Definitely had potential.

Did you even play this game? You get a second life once you make it to the Himalayas.
Not much, sure, but it's still an extra chance.

You usually only have a one line response. Did you forget to switch accounts before posting this?

Yes, you get one extra life if you make it to the second or third mission. I'm still not sure if it's one life per page or one life per mission. But you only get two chances and your game is done for.

There are still going to be a lot of times when you die at the 40 minute mark and have to start back from the beginning if you're not using cheats.
