And too many sword characters as well. Sounds like part of the problem is that Nintendo gets to choose the DLC characters over him. So apparently they decided they wanted to use a DLC slot as a commercial for the latest Fire Emblem, in both Smash 4 and Ultimate.

I've always wondered how much creative control Sakurai actually has over the series at this point. Although, the obvious Kirby and Kid Icarus bias may be indicative of something.

The point of Smash Ultimate was that nobody was being removed. That's the main reason there are so many Fire Emblem fighters in the one game.

I'm not even a fan of Zelda games and think it's one the most overrated game series in the industry but,
You're comparing a franchise with over 100 million lifetime sales, to a series which struggled so hard that it needed to reinvent itself as a waifu sim in order to not be cancelled, and even now struggles to sell 1-2 million with each release.

Like if you're a Fire Emblem fan, fine, good on you mate. But complaining there's too much Zelda representation when most Nintendo fans want more, is a weird hill die on.

Look, my opinion has always been if they had to make a rep for Three Houses, they should have done it as a Pokemon Master style. Have Byleth sit in the background and "instruct" while you swap between Dimitri, Claude, and Edelgarde.

Then, sure, it's another Fire Emblem character, but it's broader movesets featuring a lance, axe, and bow.

Wow, I really do wonder if I should go back to the smash board and proclaim just how right I was that Byleth was only there to promote 3 Houses (which is weird because I thought it sold really well to begin with).

Zelda is a action adventure game series while Fire Emblem is a strategy RPG series, so obviously Fire Emblem's gameplay appeal is more narrow, and despite having much more fleshed out characters and plots, gameplay appeal is almost everything when it comes to selling games. Zelda is obviously more popular outside of Japan for the most part, but both series have had their share of considerable successes and failures. Complaining about too many Link iterations in Smash is a valid complaint regardless of who makes it. Hopefully Ultimate is the last Smash game where we have more than two Links, Marths, etc. and echoes at all.

It's pretty disingenuous to take that stance since most people who want more Zelda reps aren't calling for more Links. There's more Math clones than there are Link clones so it's odd you'd try and spin it like that

They choose to include Byleth in Ultimate years ago, before they even knew if Three Houses would be the major success that it is.

It's not though. Zelda is incredibly popular and successful. Fire Emblem is not.

Byleth isn't the problem. Having Marth, Roy, Lucina, and Chrom all in the same game is the problem, and you can blame "EVERYONE IS HERE!" for that. If it weren't for that mandate, then I'd be willing to bet that at least 2 of Roy/Lucina/Chrom, or possibly all 3, would have missed the cut. If they included 1 of those, they would have probably removed Corrin instead after the backlash they got from their inclusion in the previous game.

If Byleth were only the 5th FE rep in Ultimate instead of the 8th rep, there would be a lot less hostility toward the inclusion. Plus, this would mean that at least 4 of the 5 reps (all 5 if they kept Corrin instead of a Marth echo) would have fully unique movesets, so the "too many sword fighters that fight exactly the same" argument goes out the window too.
