This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

I think Lee can still manage Mid Fodder, even though TWD and Telltale games in general are far less popular today than in 2013. Lee nearly managed to win his match back then, and his game still has plenty of fans on the site. He was a well-liked character as well, so I don't think a lesser opinion of his game will have a huge effect on his strength.

I don't have any experience with the game so I'm not sure how big of a role A2 has. But she looks really good design-wise and should get TJF boost. I'll say Mid Fodder, though she could be high depending on how big her role in the game is.

I played maybe 10 hours of FFXII ten years ago, so I don't really know much of Vayne. He's a corrupt politician who doesn't seem likable, so I'll put him at Low Fodder despite being playable in Dissidia 2.

After some thought I will put Terry back at Mid Fodder. It doesn't seem like he caught on much as a popular character in Smash and faded quickly once Byleth was announced. I think it would've been different if there was a major KoF release to coincide with his appearance. But as it stands Terry is viewed as a character who only got into Smash because of Sakurai bias.

The FGC and perhaps some older Gfaqers know the importance of Terry and SNK arcade games, but most of the site never played Fatal Fury or KoF and thus see Terry as an outdated and overhyped character.

Lee: Low Fodder - That 2013 match was hardly impressive, and The Walking Dead has aged about as poorly as any game imaginable since then.

A2: Fodder Line - Her role's nearly comparable to 2B and 9S, from what the wiki tells me. That plus TJF means I'll give her some respect.

Vayne: Low Fodder

Terry: Low Fodder - He was the very symbol of Smash hype when we first rated him, which was the only reason I had to give him any respect. Now, he's a pretty obscure fighting game character (from a GameFAQs perspective) who happens to have been added to Smash, which doesn't make a huge difference now that the hype is gone.

Lee Everett (The Walking Dead) - Low fodder

Walking Dead looked miserable in 2015, I don't think Lee really has anything going for him that would let him stay not-terrible independent of his game, the old Telltale is dead now, and mainstream western stuff that doesn't align with gamefaqs's usual tastes tends to drop off hard once its moment in the zeitgeist passes.

A2 (Nier: Automata) - High fodder

Nier Automata plus TJF respect. I'm hesitant to go too high on non-2B Automata characters without seeing that the game itself is worth much; it didn't impress in its GOTY.

Vayne Solidor (Final Fantasy XII) - Low fodder

I just think barely anyone cares.

Terry Bogard (King of Fighters) - Mid fodder

Would take something exceptionally wrong for me to take a real Smash character to be low fodder at this point. I think it's at least valuable for letting people know who Terry Bogard is.
