Just talking about the campaigns, specifically

Im playing through the series with a friend. Were on 3 now and its easily my favorite .

I heard 5 has some really dumb political angle regarding the Hammer of Dawn and a really dumb moral choice, but the reviews for both games seem to be consistent with the trilogy so Im not sure whos telling the truth here

Their campaigns are a step down from 3's, but Gears 5 campaign is better than 4's by a long shot. Jack was a cool addition and a nice change from the standard gameplay.

I support Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
don't compare games to feces -- if you've an opinion worth mentioning, do so civilly

What's the contrived explanation story wise for Gears 4 and 5's existence? 3 wrapped everything up

Standard happy ending override lol, Locus can apparently evolve in only 25 years

*New Gears trilogy spoilers*

The Locust didn't actually die when that blast at the end of 3 got rid of immulsion. They get crystallized and years later(like late enough for Marcus' kid to exist and be ex-COG), they evolve and start to bolster their numbers by snatching people and turning them into the Swam(basically Locust but they could infect machines now?). I played 4 and 5's campaign's with a friend and didn't think much of them, but I did like the twist at the end of 4.

Oh and I played as Jack in Horde once. It's weird, he has a taser that can damage and stunlock enemies for a short time which auto marks them for the team. He goes invisible by default and it only breaks when "sprinting" or using an ability. He has a healing tether that also repairs fortifications, and the ultimate is hacking robot enemies which is actually fun depending on what you get.

4 was pretty boring, but it picked up in the second half. 5 was enjoyable beginning to end.

I have only played 4 and 5. I think I liked 4 more than 5.

Fairly accurate.

5 can do 3 player campaign and someone can always play as Jack if they want. Jacks abilities are OP. Even if you dont have a 3rd person, you can use his abilities

Theyre definitely a step down, but theyre worth at least a play through.

4 is fine and I thought 5 was some of the most fun they've produced. Though Cait or whatever her name is is kind of a lame protagonist. The moral choice is lame as well.

For reference I think 2 is probably my favorite.

5 is a literal copy paste of 4 but with a boring, empty world.

2 was fun, except for the times where they tried to be Doom-Lite Im terms of atmosphere.

I wasn't a fan of Gears 4, it felt too safe and going off of interviews with Rod Ferguson it sounds like he felt the same way too. Prior to release they were more concerned with being able to show as a new studio they could handle the franchise and so a lot of new gameplay ideas were scrapped, those ideas were then used for Gears 5.

I really enjoyed my time with Gears 5 start to finish. The "choice" I could have done without as it didn't feel too impactful which is weird to say as you would think allowing the player to choose would make it more impactful. I think it would have hit me harder if the decision was taken out of my hands and they killed off JD which is the right choice story wise.

Other than that I think The Coalition has shown that Gears should be the main Xbox title because 4 and 5 are far better than what 343i had done with the story in Halo 4 and 5. Coalition were able to bring in a new cast while still honoring the old team and trilogy. Meanwhile 343i fucked up so hard with Blue Team and Locke that they have reverted back to Master Chief being the main protagonist.

4 is very mediocre and uninteresting, 5 is a lot better but honestly the franchise just feels really tired at this point. the plot feels contrived and uninteresting, the characters are boring, & the novelty of the gameplay has worn off by this point.

the games are enjoyable enough but both have failed to capture my interest like the original trilogy, it's kind of like they're a relic from a different era that MS is desperately trying to make work
