Instead of paying, Chevron moves their assets out of the country and then hires hundreds of lawyers to ruin the life of the guy who headed the lawsuit, Steven Donziger. Although it's a civil case, the American judge presiding it added criminal charges against Donziger, and when the prosecutors office refused to prosecute, the judge, Kaplan, hired a private law firm to do it, which is basically unheard of. Chevron paid the judge from the Ecuador case hundreds of thousands plus a stipend bigger than his old income to move to America and testify that he was bribed by Donziger. That judge has admitted he lied but Kaplan let the charges go through anyway and an appeals court ignored the issue.
