First they were all like, only way to make heaven work for eternity is to erase everyones memories every so often, then they vetoed that, and went with providing a door where you cease to exist. Seriously the show evolved into my fundamental belief that any form of eternity eventually becomes torture and the only solution is to divide your conciousness up into mini lives, or cease to exist all together.
