It's insane how if you bring up this notion to most fans, they'll REEEEE because they hate change so much.

Pokemon in general is one of the most archaic game series still alive today. Took them until 2016 to abandon grid-based movement.

Maybe not RTB, but something like the ATB system in FF7 and FF13, for sure.

What makes FF7's combat system different? Turn-based combat is turn-based combat.

It's still in real-time, meaning if you just sit there and not do anything then you're gonna get crushed.

We already have Pokken for actual Pokemon fights. Rather implement some sort of thinking into the game.

....So you think RTC doesn't require thought?

I'm sure it does, but it would probably involve some reflexes and timing more closer to a fighter than an RPG.

Nah, I'm fine with main games keeping the traditional turn based combat. Side games with alternative battle systems would be awesome, though.

You've never played a game with real-time combat before? What's with the "I'm sure it does"?

How I imagine it, animations would play a major role, so you would be taking a risk by performing certain attacks, opening yourself up to be attacked by your enemy.

Almost every non-Pokemon JRPG has had at least some active element since, like, 2000.

Animations also play a big role in fighting games too, invincibility frames and the such.

Pokemon doesn't need more reactionary gameplay, it needs more strategy. STAB and weather effects aren't enough anymore.

I recently played Dragon Quest XI and it has the most basic combat imaginable. Oddly enough they give you the ability to move around the battle space, but it does absolutely nothing.
