I mean, I know he was considered a top-tier basketball player, but there are plenty of amazing athletes that many in the general public aren't particularly aware of. Various baseball players, soccer players, tennis players, rugby players, track and field athletes, and so on. Kobe Bryant's death seems to have had a deep impact on the American collective psyche, and possibly beyond. Why is this?

He played sports good for 20 years and got accused of rape. Also people were constantly having the "MJ, Kobe, or Lebron" conversation

GOAT. But beyond basketball he was a fascinating mind. He was very philosophical and curious when it came to everything and everyone outside of basketball. He was ready and thriving for life after basketball: as an ambassador, a teacher, and a father. That's what is so crushing for me as a fan of Kobe.

One of the greatest sport players ever out of any sport in history, hella rich, not old. And he just dies out of the blue.

It was just very unexpected really

And yet for many people, that doesn't matter. Their first knowledge about him was him being accused of rape, and basically going "Oops, sorry".

For people who did understand his drive, intellect, curiosity, and potential for the next chapter of his life this is devestating. And this is just a fan's perspective. Seeing him and Gigi courtside at games, watching him point out details he sees during the game and her enthusiastic admiration for him... it's fucking horrific and sad, and i hate it.

The thing that haunts me is imagining those last few moments between he and his daughter. I know this sounds weird and dramatic, but i hope they had a moment of peace and love at the end. I know that sounds stupid given the circumstances, but i'd like to think that.

So you've never done anything in your life you regret?

He was never found guilty of anything yet received a huge public shaming for it..and this was 17 years ago

He's grown so much since then anway...appearing to have a great relationship with his family, his former teammates, supporting the NBA long after his retirement, giving to charity.

He seemed like a great man and deserves to be mourned.

The first thing I think of when I hear his name is the rape charges, I don't know why this isn't talked about more. I guess the public eye just kind of forgets about it, since it was more than a decade ago. Personally, I think its an important part of his history, but that doesn't seem to be relevant to many folks.

For me who isn't a huge sports fan I'm more impacted that he just started his retirement and then a tragedy like this happens. Yes he was young, but he was one of the greats for so long and played for so long that it feels like he was just getting into the next chapter of his life and then this happens.

Not to compare but if Jordan died I could at least sit there and go he lived a good portion of his life outside of basketball.

Kind of because 1. the charges were dropped and 2. dragging skeletons out of the closet immediately after three children lost their father and sister is a pretty shitty thing to do.

He can admit to it without being convicted >_>

This was his "apology" lol: "Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."

and he still paid the girl a bunch of money to settle the civil suit.

He admitted to sleeping with her, but disagrees that it wasn't consensual. They ended up settling out of court.

Youre surprised we dont talk about it more? This was the most prominent celebrity athlete news story from like 03-05. What more is there to talk about on this issue? He demonstrated growth as a human being and was clearly an outstanding father and family man.
