The killer is named, there's no requirement that the killer is living. Died is used to convey that the notable part is that he is dead, not that someone/something killed him. Zeus posted... Manslaughter is another example of when killed is used to convey that there was not an intentional killing. Zangulus posted... I wonder if the pilot yelled Kobe!
