He got to play the game for several hours. Most of the gameplay you see in this video is by him. I say reputable, but I'm not sure how he is received by others. I just know I recognized his voice when I watched this video, and know that his opinions are generally spot on for me.

Before Half-Life most shooters were sorta just arcadey and gamey. Half-Life 1 starts you off with a long monorail ride showing off the facility you'll eventually play through and you play through the entire story set up instead of getting that info in a manual or cinematic. Then you've got the variety of mods and the like on top of that which birthed stuff like Counter-Strike.

half life 1 is mostly driven by scripted events happening around you whereas prior shooters were for the most part static playgrounds full of enemies

quake 2 was the real start of this but half life did it bigger and better

honestly in contrast HL2 didn't do as much as 1

DOOM 2016 was anything but mediocre. And by all accounts, Eternal will be a step up.

No one is hating on the game, it's just funny to think a random "reputable" youtuber with special access is gonna hype me more for a game i was already hyped for, his opinion is irrelevant.

I know. You have a good track record on this board in my book. I'm just a little infuriated by all the pessimism in this topic. Before 20 minutes ago, I've seen nothing but praise for D2016 and hype for Eternal. Now suddenly in my topic, we dont want it to be good anymore? I know that's not what YOU were saying, but your post was kind of like the straw that broke the camel's back.

Doom wasn't really for me (I might give it another go) but it seemed more like an example of a game that found great success by going back to its roots more than being revolutionary. Eternal seems to build on that foundation more. Which is great! But I think for a game to be revolutionary it has to have something that makes people think "Other games need to have the stuff this game is doing" and I dunno what that's supposed to be here.

Half-Life quickly made a lot of its competition feel dated.

I think it's okay to be a bit suspicious of statements that could be hyperbolic that are intended to build hype instead of actually telling people about the game.

just because people aren't nutting at the mere mention of a game doesn't mean that they're down on it. it'll probably be fine, but i wouldn't base that opinion off of youtubers who got an early preview because their primary interest is in their view count and making sure companies get them early access in the future so people watch their shit

I'm extremely hyped about the game but I'm taking the guy's claim of it revolutionizing the FPS genre with a grain of salt.

Can't wait to play it.

Everybody knew Fallout 76 was going to be bad. Expectations for that game were almost as bad as No Man's Sky. Expectations for DOOM Eternal have been nearly unanimously positive. Fallout 76 was a bad example to use for this case.

Well I dont think we'll have anything concrete until the game releases.

I get that saying it will be as revolutionary as Half Life is a big statement that will be difficult for the game to look up to. Plus, such a statement won't be confirmable until years after the game is released. I'm not saying I know that statement will be true. I'm saying there is optimism to be drawn from that statement, along with everything else I saw/heard from the video in the OP.

I honestly can't remember the last time I actually played a FPS game.

DOOM 2016 would be a great place to start and will get you hyped for DOOM Eternal.

Doom already revolutionized the FPS, hell it revolutionized the industry as a whole. It doesn't need to aim for perfection, it nailed it on the first go round back in '93.
