Came out yesterday and I've been having a blast. The servers have been suffering a bit due to all the people trying to play but this is definitely satisfying my desire for a Monster taming/battling adventure after the disappointment that was Sword and Shield.

First gym leader is a 6v6 battle and on the first island I had two actual tough battles. Way more challenging than Gen 8 ever was an it's not even close. Some cute mon designs too!

If you can afford the $35 and are fine with it still being in early access so it's not complete yet, I definitely recommend it a go especially if you are a Pokemon fan wanting more.

Seems pretty cool. Considering getting it. Is it more of a linear or open world experience?

Im having fun but the game kinda crashes every 30 minutes and theres queues to actually get into the servers so theres big problems out I guess thats what you get when you get an indie early access MMO on launch

Uh also the monster names are really lame (and to an extent the designs are too but thats subjective)

It's pretty fun, but I find myself feeling like it's SO much like Pokemon that I'd rather just play Pokemon.

The monsters look like garbage except for the platypus which is a literal Pokemon reject.

Art style is pretty bad too.

Heard good things about the gameplay though!

I'm not far enough to answer that, but it does follow the gym/"dojo" system like Pokemon, and based on the levels listed on wiki, they're meant to be beaten in a specific order. So it seems linear in that aspect, atleast.

Eh. Johto kinda proved that the formula doesn't really work for an open experience without dynamic leveling.

I got into the stress test but the servers were pretty busted so I didn't get to try it out. Was going to wait until the campaign is finished to give it a shot. Doubly so if they're still a little fucked up.

How's the progression? My biggest worry about a Pokemon MMO is that they'd make it super grindy to artificially pad playtime.

The monster designs look sweet, and I like the overall art style a lot.

Playing Coop with a friend is just great. War and I played for like 6 hours straight doing campaign stuffs. Game is still in early access and has a ton of content coming in the future and the main campaign is ALREADY longer than Swsh's (more enjoyable too)

Do battle animations get better later on? I keep seeing people rave about how much better than Pokemon they are, but so far they're the exact same "Monster wobbles in place and a foot image appears over the enemy for a kick attack" that Pokemon does.

It is pretty grindy if you want access to a full team. But if you want to play it out with a small focussed team there is very little grinding needed really

I played the stress tests and managed to get to the first dojo (over the course of three tests though).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmHmZ8tLlGI

I do like it, but I think I'm gonna wait for the full release on Switch to play it again. Apart from anything else, the guy I normally play co-op games with will probably do the same, so there's that angle, but I think there's still a lot of polish in a bunch of areas needed. Generic animations, balancing of spawns (although, this might be to do with so many monsters still missing from the game? Apparently a lot of evolutions are missing too, at least from looking at the wiki), plus be nice to play when there are more cosmetics and housing items. And there's always the risk that early access progress is lost on launch.

My biggest complaint, but it's not something that's gonna be fixed and it's not enough to stop me playing, are the monster designs (and to extent, the art design generally). It's fine, but it just feels a bit... generic? The best description I've heard is that the monsters look like a Saturday morning cartoon doing a Pokemon parody.

To my knowledge, the MMO aspects are all optional (aside from that you need to be online the whole time). The game can be played like a standard single player Pokemon game if you want.

Oh, actually, that is another complaint. The MMO aspect is super annoying. Like, it would be fine if you could just see a couple of people on screen at once, but when areas are so filled with people you can't even see the NPC talking to you, it's a problem. Even worse when you go indoors.

In terms of designs most aren't that amazing to me but there's a handful that I quite like. As someone who wasn't really a fan of the bulk of Swsh's designs, I enjoy these designs more overall I'd say.

Got to play some more today.

I'm enjoying it more. It still definitely feels like a full blown Pokemon ripoff more than just being "inspired" by, but at the very least it's a fun ripoff. There's definitely some challenge there, which is fun.

At this point, I'd still pick regular Pokemon over this, but this is definitely good enough to scratch the itch in between, and that opinion may even change as they add more content.
