I used Focus Sash'd Shell Smash Barbaracle in XY myself.

if you keep hazards up sash doesnt work, and cloyster takes a lot of damage from hazards anyways, some people even have started putting heavy duty boots on him
a lot of it boils down to recognizing the threat from team preview and not allowing him to freely set up, also after hazard damage and the shell smash drop a nice priority mach punch can put him right out
a pokemon like toxapex with haze also works well

Shell Smash Cloyster with Rock Blast and Icicle Spear and Razor Shell get great coverage.

It can be hard to set up but once you do its deadly.

Another fun setup with Linoone is:
-Belly Drum
-Extreme Speed
-Shadow Claw
-Seed Bomb

This gives perfect coverage and the extreme speed has some of the best priority in the game AND you get stab with it. Take the ability that helps him eat berries early and he will he it as soon as he uses belly drum.

I got lots more of these.

ah that's a weird play, cloyster shouldnt be able to so easily setup on most leads, who is your lead?
for example i lead with ferrothorn or toxapex and cloyster cant set up on either

In X/Y Absol was broke, you could get crit hits every single attack

Highest level Aimee+Super Luck+Razor Claw+1 of the 4 high chance of critical hit moves, Slash/Dark Slash/Psycho Cut/Shadow Claw

It gets killed by anything that's faster than it after a shell smash or priority (e.g. Sucker Punch is really nice).
People run a similar setup with Excadril and Mimikyu (but with Life Orb) except replacing Shell Smash with things that actually matter.

I led with a Togekiss and tried to set up a nasty plot but ended up having my whole team swept instead.

you can just not try to lead with a setup mon lol
in general there was no reason for you to click nasty plot when you saw he was cloyster lmao
im wondering what you thought would happen while you nasty plotted? that he would switch while he had type advantage?

I mean it's his fault for using a slow pokemon like Togekiss. Leading with a setup sweeper is a terrible idea. At the very least he should have revenge killed with priority.

Was my first time facing a cloyster so assumed hed go for an ice beam which I could live. Not to be though

just gotta charge it to the game, pokemon is 90% knowing what your opponent can and probably will do and that only comes with playing alot lol
also why would you know you live a cloyster's ice beam? cloyster never uses ice beam lmao and you most of the time dont survive icicle spear, the move they all do use

These are beginner/medium competitive strategies that havr been present in the meta for probably 10 years or more.

There are much cheaper strategies than these. And you can counter all of them, some of the time.

You need knowledge, skill, practice and a little luck to deal with them all.

In particular, a physically-defensive Toxapex with Haze would be one of the best ways to handle a Cloyster with a focus-sash, using Shell Smash.
