And one day we must ask the question, Why are there forty million poor people in America? And when you begin to ask that question, you are raising questions about the economic system, about a broader distribution of wealth. When you ask that question, you begin to question the capitalistic economy. And Im simply saying that more and more, weve got to begin to ask questions about the whole society

Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all Gods children.

We must recognize that we cant solve our problem now until there is a radical redistribution of economic and political power this means a revolution of values and other things. We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together you cant really get rid of one without getting rid of the others the whole structure of American life must be changed. America is a hypocritical nation and [we] must put [our] own house in order.

The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism.

But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.

"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

i prefer this one

"Capitalism does not permit an even flow of economic resources. With this system, a small privileged few are rich beyond conscience, and almost all others are doomed to be poor at some level. That's the way the system works. And since we know that the system will not change the rules, we are going to have to change the system."

he was assassinated while fighting for Memphis sanitation workers, their standard of living hasn't really increased at all.

The FBI sent him letters telling him that he should kill himself.

If a man hasnt discovered something that he will die for, he isnt fit to live.

An individual has not started living fully until they can rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of humanity. Every person must decide at some point, whether they will walk in light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment: Lifes most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?

One of the ways to rise above this self-centeredness is to move away from self and objectify yourself in something outside of yourself. Find some great cause and some great purpose, some loyalty to which you can give yourself and become so absorbed in that something that you give your life to it.

There is the danger that you will misuse your capitalism. I still contend that money can be the root of all evil. It can cause one to live a life of gross materialism. I am afraid that many among you are more concerned about making a living than making a life. You are prone to judge the success of your profession by the index of your salary and the size of the wheel base on your automobile, rather than the quality of your service to humanity.

a lot of public schools completely ignore the socialist bent of his activism, and even bypass the fact that he was largely considered a subversive dangerous troublemaker by a lot of white communities at the time. we killed him, and then our institutions have done everything they could to turn a modified image of him into a cudgel against black activists that followed, demanding to know why they weren't acting like the guy they hated just as much at the time

Ive got an MLK quote tattooed on my stomach, this one:

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
