MM is in a very weird state right now. Consumers want MM games but won't actually buy them but then wonders why Capcom don't give a shit about MM LMAO.

Not without some kind of paradigm shift. They've made plenty of retro games that sell okay but don't justify a bigger push, and MM collections continue to be a cheap source of additional revenue. Even another Legends game probably wouldn't realistically sell that well, but it would at least turn a profit. It's clearly still popular among old fans, but as a franchise it needs to grow.

They need something new that somehow doesn't piss off fans. The Mega Man version of what Symphony of the Night did for Castlevania. The Z and ZX series started to do this, but I don't know that it went far enough.

It had better be in the SNES style, or at least 2D/sprite based. The transition to 3D models in stuff like X7/X8 and MM11 really damaged the feel of it, for me.

It will continue, just slowly. They can't pump out a game every year. 11 was good and recent. The Zero/ZX Collection is coming soon. In terms of fangames Rock N Roll came out a couple of months ago and is worth playing.

I can see 12 and possibly X9 becoming a thing in the future.

I feel like everyone wanting MML3 would lead it to a similar fate as Shenmue 3. It would come out and they'd be like "Oh, this modern version of a super dated game is super dated, what the hell?"

I feel like that they can upgrade MML3 and it won't lose its luster from the originals. I know its asking for much but the story and feeling that game gave was just so good. It had its own power beyond just Megaman. That first game brought on such memories...even if it looked empty, there was a lot of magic to it.

This seems like exactly what a Shenmue super fan would say...

Those things just happen to be the hardest thing to deliver when expectations reach a certain point. Especially when decades went by and story telling is on a whole different level. It's not like the game was on some FF6 level of story telling. I just don't imagine it holding up. Playing games with nostalgia if fine, we all do it. But some games just end up dated and needing that factor to thrive in any way. MML would be a very hard sell to anybody who hasn't played it yet.

I would think a fully 3D Mega Man X game that used the Metroidvania style and was semi open world like Dark Souls/Seikiro would be fucking dank.

So, a game that has nothing to do with MegaMan, but MegaMan stuff thrown in it?

It says a lot about how dated a series is when you have to completely change the entire interior of a game aside from the paint job to make it sound appealing.

I don't feel that the story was TOO amazing, but the setting was, to me. It was different enough from other Mega Man games and wasn't a platformer. I think its a game for people like me...people who don't really care about platforming too much.

Define comeback.

Megaman has usually survived by creating a spin-off that captured a new audience and managed to remain popular/relevant for a good number of years, with a few token releases for older series.

There's nothing wrong with liking it. When you say "People like me" you're just tiptoeing around saying how niche of a marketplace it has tho. Honestly, companies should just do low budget sequels and just make them as if they would of came out on the same, or even next gen console. That way they don't flush a bunch of money down the train and we get to pretend we live in an alternate universe where the sequel actually got released without a huge gap in between. Kind of like what they did with MegaMan 9 & 10 now that I think about it lol. I'm guessing those still take a lot of mind power tho. So it probably isn't cheap regardless. Just gotta accept they can't make it profitable.

Mega Man will be one of Capcoms budget franchises for years to come. 11 and the legacy collections sold well enough for that to become a possibility. Theyve been in active development on the next entry for months now, this has been confirmed by the guy in charge of Mega Man now. Chances are this is X9.

The biggest question mark in regards to megaman is the X series. The story and games quality is a complete s***fest to the point that sort of rebooting from X5, I dont see how they could salvage it.

Its difficult continuing series from 9 after 4 installments that were either awful, or that nobody played.....And storywise the megaman zero series becuase of it at best is a alternate timeline, or worst completely non canon.

I think the franchise is on a pretty good path right now. Some minor stumbles with X Collections but 11 was successful and we've got Zero/ZX coming up. There's distinct possibilities for X9, a Legends/2/Tron collection, Battle Network gacha or multiple Battle Network collections, and a Star Force collection.
