You're right that it's beautiful. You're wrong that it's boring. Wait, is the whole film really one long, continuous shot? --- "It was some post on the NFL board that got him." -AwesomeToTheMAX ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah, it's made to appear that way. That's part of what makes it such an amazing achievement. There's only one spot in the movie where it clearly cuts and that's because it involves a time skip. Other than that, it all looks continuous because they hide the cuts they made. You're there with them every step of the journey. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Yeah, one part the screen fades to black for like 8 seconds. Other than that it's pretty much continuous and just one long journey shot.

I expect to still like it because I love well-done historical stuff even if its a slog. Like Scorceses Silence was still enjoyable for that reason. Also, I like a lot of the actors in both films. who says it's a slog? you seem to be under the wrong impression of what kind of movie this is. it's not Silence dude. 1917 is essentially a thriller. it's one tension-filled set piece after another. there's hardly a lull in the movie --- ... Pretty much. I consider it a period piece that takes place on the Western Front of WWI. Well, it's like other people said, if you are expecting an all-out fight and some Rambo level heroics, it's not that type of movie. It is rather a story of survival behind enemy lines. Drawing attention to yourself isn't going to do you any favors in that situation. I will concede however being interested in WWI will go a long way in your enjoyment of the movie. It is not a shooty-shooty adrenaline movie. It is more of an Alfred Hitchcock suspense movie, set in an amazing environment. --- "Whatever the reason you're on Mars, I'm glad you're there, and I wish I was with you." ~Carl Sagan. I like that's I didn't know anyone at all in fact. Though I guess there were some established actors, I just don't watch too many new movies. If you went into it expecting Saving Private Ryan, then yeah I could see it being boring.
You need to be in a different mindset. Look around every scene at the details in the background and the way it's framed. See where the camera goes behind a tree or whatever and hid a cut where they created a seamless transition into the next scene. How the music sets the mood. It's a great study on filmmaking. I didn't think it was boring per se, but I didn't feel any of the tension that it wanted me to feel. The trailers pretty much give away some of the plot points (
Everyone also has Stormtrooper aim which removes any tension. I didn't care at all for Blake or his brother or the number of people who would be charging in the battle because it was just a number. In Saving Private Ryan, you care a whole lot about Ryan before even meeting him. The cinematography and directing are fantastic though and should be celebrated. --- We're a forest of lives, but we grow tall and wide. We'll never be cut down. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Throughout the first half all I was thinking is "this is sick (in a good way)." It slowed down a lot after We are the second wave. I think I might see it again. But later, when there is almost nobody there. My crowd was respectful, but the theater was packed so you get the coughs and jacket sounds.
