The ending had little impact because both the characters were unlikable. I like the idea behind the film, but they did a shitty job making you care about the characters. They were so one dimensional that at the end you didnt really give a fuck what happens to them.

The director was trying to have us see things events the eyes of the main character, whom is sympathetic to Ava. The twist is that Nathan is telling the truth, and she's manipulating Caleb (and in turn, the audience) in order to escape.

1- She wasn't cold blooded, we saw how her creator treated them. She was afraid.
2- Why are you assuming that he would program them to be governed so?
