Chewy views other beings like pet dogs. He just gets a new puppy after his last one dies. Yoda ran away, Han and Leia die. Then he got an adorable new Poe and he's happy again.

The worst part about being Chewie in RotS is having all of your friends die. But at least he finally gets his medal.

It did kill that one Wookiee whose sword you get. I assume he wasn't Force sensitive. Granted, that Wookiee was specifically hunting for the beast and it could have just defended itself.

I went in blindly into the EU and the book where that happened was the first one I read.

...I didn't really touch the EU after that lol.

I believe so. I know they wanted to kill off Luke instead, but Lucasfilm vetoed that.
