The Oscars will be host-less, once again. Last year marked the Academys first break with hosting tradition. After Kevin Hart stepped back from planned hosting duties, the Oscars went without a monologue-delivering MC for the first time in 30 years, with producers recruiting stars to introduce segments instead. The show received mixed reviews from critics, opening with performance by Queen followed by Tina Fey, Amy Pohler and Maya Rudolph coming out to introduce the show. "For the first hour or so, the novelty and general amiability of the presenters and winners made it seem like the host had been the thing dragging down the Oscars all these years," wrote USA TODAY TV critic Kelly Lawler.

But she opined movie's biggest night ended up needing a guiding hand: "After the Poehler/Fey/Rudolph trio was done, there were few presenters with comedy skills; the awards were more like a press conference with movie clips in the middle." Others were fans of the new format. In truth, the show wasnt really that different, because no matter who the Academy chooses for the gig, once the host delivers a monologue, he or she typically disappears for most of the rest of the show so much so that its always kind of surprising when they show up again, usually to make a joke about something thats occurred during the broadcast, so that you can tell theyve been paying attention," wrote the Arizona Republic's Bill Goodykoontz. And without a host, the Academy left it to Oscar winner Julia Roberts to present best picture and then say goodnight. Well, apparently that wraps up the Academy Awards, she closed.

i'm a fan of a host-less awards show, unless they actually bring something different and meaningful to the table

I'm the exact opposite. The host taking potshots at the audience is basically the only thing worth watching. Absent that, the award show is a glorified bulleted list that you can read the next morning.

It'd be great if Hollywood got a surprise round 2 with Ricky Gervais

I only like how he pissed so many of them off. Outside of him hosting the GGs I know nothing about him
