Man I can imagine. I probably wouldn't be able to get any work done if a new baby was on the way.

Is anyone doing the nycmidnight short story comp? You have 8 days to craft a 2500 (max) short story.

I was given:
Genre - Ghost Story
Subject - A Reenactment
Character - A Newborn Mother.

mystory is about a mother cat teaching her kittens how to fight off ghosts during the reenactment of the "water wars" of 2032. The Reenactment makes all those that died in the real war come back, so the cats and kittens gotta kill 'em before they possess the humans.

NYCmidnight does flashfiction, scripts, and poetry comps throughout the year. It's pretty fun as they give you a timeline and random shit to write about. (Yes, it costs money to enter, but it's less than $50).
This is my third time doing stuff with them, and I gotta say, it's a lot of fun.

So Brandon Sanderson is putting up his 2020 fantasy writing class videos. I watched the 2016 ones before. They're pretty good listening while I'm doing office work stuff. Any of you guys watch them?

They're free on youtube. Here's the first new class of 2020:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6HOdHEeosc&t=1s

And then if you just want to watch the whole thing all at once you could go back and watch the 2016 class, which is already all up.

oh yeah, @deanshow, i checked out your audio drama and tbh it's not really up my alley. not really a fan of the subject matter so far, being contemporary relationship drama. dunno if it gets into other subject matter past the beginning, but what i checked out so far wasn't really clicking with me. and i dunno if it's just the way audio dramas are, but the voice acting seemed really weird to me lol. like kind of overacted or whatever. i think that's somewhat standard for audio dramas though, i guess, that kind of emphatic delivery. anyway, i wish i had something of more substance to tell ya, but yeah, it's just not my thing. i don't own headphones either and my house is pretty loud most of the time, so following along with it without subtitles or a transcript was sort of difficult too.
Fair enough man. Yeah audio dramas have to be overacted to compensate for the lack of physical acting

Oh I know what you mean about beta readers. It's a big ask, and it doesnt help that my book is epic length.

I'm most likely going to hire some people on fiverr, honestly. I dont mind dropping some cash on it.

There is a betareaders subreddit. Not sure how good a resource that would be though.

I managed 2 chapters of revision yesterday!

my word doc says im on page 307/338 so really only 30 more pages of edits to go....

probably going to do a single reread aloud to my wife (we are just about wrapped up with WoT book 1...great book btw...so i think its time someone heard this bad boy sung aloud)

then maybe query? my beta readers didnt really get back to me which was expected since one is now pregnant again with a crazy 2.5 year old...who has the time lmao

I'm listed as a Creative Writing minor but I don't really do any writing outside of my class. I used to write a lot of fanfiction when I was a kid. Well not a lot, I'd start with a chapter or two then abandon due to a lack of commitment.

I like studying the craft and I really appreciate good films. But I don't have anything in me that's yelling to be written, it seems.

wrote a quick synopsis in case someone requests it

decided to throw a single query out to see if I get a response. According to query manager, the agent responds very quickly for a full request...should give me a good gauge on whether my pitch is decent or not

bonus - the agent's wishlist has something VERY similar to what my book is on it so I certainly noted that in the query letter

thx - lemme think on sending the synopsis

I whipped it together today in about 20 minutes all from memory as I haven't read through the book in 2 months so I may have to adjust a few things as I reread :)

Thats why I only sent out to one agent really...I'm testing out my actual query (no synopsis was requested yet)

ah see it was rejected which means there's either something wrong with the query, the sample pages, or just not right for the agent

i've had about 2 months distance from the beginning and I'm rereading and noticing there is a lot of things I still need to fix. So I'm probably gonna go through it again before querying again. Not because of the rejection, but more because I can see the writing isn't as tight as it could be.

It's amazing what distance will do for you

what i also find helpful is reading it aloud.

This works wonders for me. I remember reading in my head, it sounded great, then read it out like and was not impressed and neither was my wife who was listening.
