He just told people to shut up about politics on the show, it's not like Stephen Colbert isn't on tv 5 nights a week talking about Trump opening the show, during his celebrity guest interview, and the closing.

the office and extras are two of my favourite pieces of TV. Even his earlier stand ups are p good iirc although I have no interest in revisiting to confirm.

I feel he is a good example of somebody becoming much worse the more you are exposed to them. Like I remember seeing his twitter in like idk 2009 or 2010 and it was p bad. Seems like post extras he has devolved on a personal level to either endless le epic atheist superiority or complaining about offended people apparently are. His tv work since then has been way too heavy on the schmaltz too.

Colbert ain't funny anymore, his show sucks nowadays. Low hanging fruit. But that's what brings in the ratings, I presume.

But Gervais is obnoxiously in everything he does, and the whole atheist schtick does more to hurt the perception of atheists.

Exactly. He's not my cup of tea, but at least he has the balls to tell a joke no matter who it may offend.

Comedy has always been offensive to some... If people want sterile comedy... then they're entitled to be bored lol

Honestly I thought he was on point.

For those that didn't see it, some highlights:
https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-50983253
  • "I came here in a limo tonight and the licence plate was made by Felicity Huffman."
  • "Martin Scorsese said the Marvel films remind him of theme parks. I don't know what he's doing hanging around theme parks - he's not big enough to go on the rides."
  • "Knives Out has three nominations tonight. See what can happen when you don't dress people up as Cats?"
  • "We were going to do an In Memoriam section, but when I saw the list of people who had died this year, it wasn't diverse enough. It was mostly white people. And I thought, 'No, not on my watch.'"
  • "In a moment we're going to see a short clip from The Irishman. It's 88 minutes long."
  • "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nearly three hours long. Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere, and by the end his date was too old for him."
  • "Lots of big celebrities here tonight. Legends. Icons. On the same table, there's Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Baby Yoda. Oh no, that's Joe Pesci, sorry."
  • "Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars for some offensive tweets. Luckily for me, the Hollywood Foreign Press can barely speak English and they've no idea what Twitter is, so I got offered this gig by fax."

The line that is pissing some people off:
"If you win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech," he advised the stars during his opening monologue.
"You're in no position to lecture the public about anything, you know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg."

And then when he made an "Epstein didn't kill himself" joke and the audience groaned, he responded with "Shut up. I know he's your friend, but I don't care".

Because they agree with said celebrity's positions and take offense to being told the famous person that agrees with them has no idea what they're talking about.

the producers undoubtedly knew he was going to say something controversial. But the guests in attendance most certainly did not.
