I'd best interpret it as microbes that FEED on the force, so that they can be used as an INDICATOR - but not actually the cause.

Otherwise there'd be no way for the Force to interact with things like rocks or starships

Lucas has said multiple times this isn't the case, though. They're literally the thing that connects people to the Force and allows them to manipulate it. Without them, there is no Force, and life wouldn't exist.

A telekinetic can pick up objects without those objects themselves having telekinesis.

The Force can interact with unliving things. By definition, the Force only applies to living things. Ergo, the Force can affect things that do not inherently possess the Force themselves.
