I must admit, I barely knew who he was, when the news covered his death. What has he done to the West, or places like America and Britain in general? I can't think of anything, although admittedly, I still know little about him.

The news has said surprisingly little about what he is responsible for. I would expect that from American TV stations, but not from stuff like the BBC.

According to sources in the White House, it was reported that it was nothing special with his trip, it was business as usual.
The way things works, Pentagon shows the President different plans and he chose what they shall do. Some times they sneak in worse plans, like assassinate somebody, to make the other options look better. Killing Soleimani was one of the options in December 28, which Trump said no to. He wanted them to bomb some pro-Iran group that had attacked US soldiers some days earlier.
Some days later he saw the embassy attack on TV and went crazy, demanding them to kill Soleimani.
The Generals didnt think Trump was crazy enough to pick the worst plan, but he did.

I think there is more to it than that. Liberals are only upset with Trump for not running this through congress first which is a fair point. I think they just wanted to make it so without debating it.
