You want a reality check, you need to think about how gatekeeping this culture is.

Im not phased by a lack of invite. I wouldnt want to try and associate with anyone so close minded.

I agree that this is just ignorance at play. I'm white, and I have very long, thick, dark brown hair, and I like wearing it down. Even though it's straight and a pretty common colour, I'll usually get a "oh your hair is so long!" from random people at the store or if I'm waiting in line somewhere. It's flattering, but I don't like being snuck upon or accosted by old women and curious children.

So far, no one has tried touching it, but my sister has naturally curly hair and people have just reached over and touched her braids or hair during conversations.

Yep. All humans do this.

There is a video of a remote tribe seeing a white person for the first time ever.

After the initial shock, they basically touch him all over.

You can search for it on youtube. I can't link it cause the tribal women have no tops.

But posters ITT and on twitter like using this as an excuse to whine about white people ofc.

Of course there's more to it. People of color in the workplace are often made very uncomfortable because of their hair from colleagues, to job "hair standards." Did you know California became the FIRST state to ban workplace discrimination of natural hair just last year(2019)? 2019 ffs. CE would like you to believe everything is A OK :')

https://everydayfeminism.com/2015/09/dont-touch-black-womens-hair/

This is a super common racial microaggression, which is a subtle form of racism often done by someone who doesnt mean to be racist. Ive had lots of people (usually white people) touch my hair, and in most cases, the touch came with a well-meaning compliment.

But you probably dont know what the temptation to touch Black womens hair means in US society or about the impact if you follow your urge.

The objectification of Black bodies has been part of US culture since slavery, and its still going strong as one of our everyday struggles. This behavior affects all Black folks, but for this piece, Im focusing on racialized sexism against women.

But wait when you touch Black womens hair, you dont have racist or sexist intentions. So how does this relate to racism or sexism?

The answer comes down to the one of our core feminist values, consent respecting everyones agency over their own bodies, including their hair.Having our hair touched is just one of the ways Black women are often denied this agency in our society.

I went to a writing retreat where a woman was insatiably curious about how my hair feels. Shed never been around hair like mine before, and she stared until I thought her eyes would bulge out of her head.

I finally gave in to letting her touch it before the poor woman had a medical emergency.

She asked the same questions every curious white person asks: Is it real? How do you get it like that? How do you wash it?

I understand the curiosity. But do you know why youre so curious? Its because the texture of my 4C hair is often invisible in mainstream society.

Eurocentric beauty standards mean that white women are a lot more common in the media than Black women. The Black women who are visible tend to have chemically straightened hair. Even I struggle to find care tips for and images of my hair type. So it makes sense that you havent come across those, and I appreciate that you want to correct your lack of information.

But unlike the white people who dont notice how unusual my hair seems until they feel the urge to touch it, I notice the invisibility of my hair type all the time.

And that invisibility sends the constant message that my hair is unappealing which is just one of many media messages about Black womens inferiority. Its hard to feel good about yourself when popular images of beauty dont look like you.

So if you really want to learn about our hair, find information through research instead of reminding a Black woman that her beauty is rarely celebrated.

I wouldn't say that, I wouldn't even say that the people here are necessarily racist, or that the people in this video had racist intent. There's just people on this board who don't want to hear black people speaking out about social injustices or pointing out white privilege, and many seem fine to claim that they don't find black people attractive.

First off, its always situations like these that end up with white people telling black people how they should feel or react to something. Then when the black people try to explain how/why the situation is wrong, were told that we shouldnt be so sensitive or other shit that completely invalidates our feelings.

Secondly, I will admit that we cant get the whole situation from the video. To the people arguing the She seems cool with it, I would also like to point out that opposite could also be true, and that she could be suffering from some sort of social anxiety that has left her feeling as if theres nothing she can do. She could also be aware that causing a scene could ultimately cost her her job.

All that being said, I will tell you, that a great deal of Black women do not like their hair being touched. Especially uninvited. Im sure it probably different for dudes, but im sure there some that dont like it either.

i dont think this was a racial thing, but race does play a part in it. If the touching was uninvited, then it most certainly is an example of ignorance at its finest.
