I see people on Twitter freaking out about being drafted into WW3, because they checked a "selective service" box on the FASFA. When does the draft start?

Unless this whole thing spirals dangerously out of control, there won't be a draft. It'd be political suicide.

Also we don't fight wars with massive numbers anymore.

Even in CE's fantasy doomsday scenario where China and Russia break all bonds of logic and declare war on the United States over Iran (roflmao), there still wouldn't be a draft. There will literally never be a military draft in the United States or any other modern military that relies on drone warfare ever again.

They'll never have a draft again

A war with Iran would last about 20 or 30 days then a few years of instability fighting ISIS like terrorist groups

The Iranian government would easily submit to the US government after just a few weeks of bombing Tehran

Idiots gonna idiot.

Even if there was a draft it would be about as effective as the war on drugs. It was already proven the point of the draft was useless more or less.
Trump is bagging on a war to get himself into office again so he won't get to prison, no way he enacts a draft, it would be literal political suicide.

Because fear draws more clicks than rationalized discourse?

And yes you do sign up for the selective service (the draft) when you apply for FAFSA (federal financial aid for school).

But there won't be a draft. As I said it'd be political suicide. On top of the fact that we fight wars with air superiority, not massive invasion forces.

Don't be because it's never gonna happen.

Also fun fact did you know that in Vietnam only about 25% of the total forces were drafted? Everyone else was a volunteer service member.

Someone also made a good point, saying that we now fight wars with drones and other advancements, since technology has improved so much since the first draft. A draft would not go well.

He wants to win reelection.

Instituting a draft in a war of his own making would never work out. He's not that unintelligent.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

The way I've heard it phrased is that (at least in Iraq) people in the middle east are more loyal to family and their village than the country so a lot of Iraq's standing force then kind of fucked off once it was obvious they had no chance.

Now I imagine Iran is different and considering we just murked one of their top Generals who was well liked and respected, we may have galvanized the Iranian forces.

But I'm not nearly educated enough on this topic to basically do anything more than cooler talk bullshit about it so...

wrong an iran war would be exceedingly difficult, it wouldnt be a walk in the park like it was with iraq and afganhistan. iran has a pretty powerful military.

https://www.globalfirepower.com/countries-listing-middle-east.asp

Iran has nothing. MOABs and constant stealth bomber attacks would immediately beat them into submission.

The lasting effect of a regime change in the area is what the US should worry about. Someone like Baghdadi will rise up and lead another Islamic State of terrorism.

The problem for us is going to be gas prices rising.

not to mention china depends on them for oil, going to war with them and you bet china will get involved too. do you wanna wake that sleeping dragon?

China and Russia will just shrug and deal with the next regime that takes power. They'll have some harsh words and saber rattling, but they know that an all out war will lead to nuclear winter.

China, Russia, and the United States control the world economy through manufacturing, technology, and natural resources. They won't do anything to screw up that triad of power.

The way modern war actually works, there's little chance a draft would ever seriously happen, especially with a nation that relies on high tech military technology like the US. If a draft ever happened, you can safely assume that things are already pretty sunk, 'cause they most certainly won't bother trying to get a sudden influx of draftees up to speed on stuff like cryptography, drone piloting, or satellite readings. You'd mostly just be there as a warm body & meat shield.

ummm iran has the 4th biggest navy in the world right behind us, the usa. take your goofy gifs else where and educate yourself son.

https://www.globalfirepower.com/navy-ships.asp

https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-navies-in-the-world-2018-4
Wow, you looked at a couple of numbers from a link and determined they are a comparable threat because... numbers? lol

Let's break this down since you're apparently too lazy to educate yourself.

Total Naval Assets: 398
Aircraft Carriers: 0
Frigates: 6
Destroyers: 0
Corvettes: 3
Submarines: 34 (zero are nuclear)
Patrol Vessels: 88 (wrong, actually 230)
Mine Warfare: 3

Total Naval Assets: 415
Aircraft Carriers: 24
Frigates: 22
Destroyers: 68
Corvettes: 15
Submarines: 68 (all nuclear)
Patrol Vessels: 13
Mine Warfare: 11

Just that simple breakdown from that first link shows how incredibly outgunned Iran is. You'll notice too that the numbers don't add up. They aren't accounting for a lot of different types of ships. More alarmingly is that more than half of Iran's fleet is composed of patrol vessels (The 2nd link states Iran has 230 patrol craft, aka useless)

If you take out actual patrol vessel numbers then Iran's fleet shrinks to 168 compared to 398 for the US.

But let's go beyond that because these numbers aren't entirely accurate. The US Fleet actually has over 490 ships with 90+ currently under construction or on order (feel free to look this up on Naval Vessel Register)

Powerful compared to Iraq? Sure, they actually have a real military. But powerful? lol. Sure. We'll go with "powerful". In any case what you or anyone else thinks regarding the length of the war is irrelevant because you have zero idea how it would play out. So moot point since it's based on opinion.

Just armchair QBing here, but in a battle of naval warfare, one must not forget capability of the nations Air Forces.

Which America could handily exercise control over the air, with 7:1 numbers in aircraft numbers. Not to mention the air capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps.

Now obviously numbers aren't the tell all (because as if America would send even a 1/3 of it's numbers) but if Iran's Navy wanted to do anything, they'd have to strike first, fast, and decisively and maintain an iron fisted grip on the Gulf of Oman as well as maintain a nasty tactical presence throughout the Arabian Sea.

Cause if they can't maintain air superiority in those key places, while also fielding off potential invasion forces from both sides (Iraq and Afghanistan) then it'd only be a matter of time before Iran quickly found itself hurting.

This isn't to say that Iran would be a cake walk but America's whole bread and butter is war.

unless Russia (and/or China) go full in on supplying and supporting Iran, Iran wouldn't stand a real chance in a years long war.

But none of us here are remotely knowledgeable enough or capable enough to make the decision of who would win and arguing about it is stupid.
