Oh I liked the kahuna theme from sun and moon, but I only really fell in love after hearing it in the frlg soundfont

I think I really didn't care for the sun/moon soundfont, but some of the music is good!

Something I think that pokemon could borrow from fire emblem is making routes have a overworld and battle theme to make the transition feel more smooth and so that you don't have to start from the beginning of each song 40 times.

Ok so now that I have mystery trade or whatever its called working I gotta say, it's pretty good! I tested it by getting into a cutscene while I was loading (which gave me anxiety) and to my surprise, the trade happened DURING my cutscene and the animation played a few seconds after. I also got to see that the regional language entries for foreign pokemon still happens. There's no reason to think game freak would cut that, except for the reason "game freak just cuts shit sometimes shrug"

So hurrah for game freak meeting expectations, heck in terms of the mystery trade, exceeding expectations.

Bump and tag.

So we can't connect with just the people on our friends list to trade, this is one of those things that baffles me how we aren't talking about it. This is like bad online gaming for 2010. Instead we have to generate our own four digit code, and with thousands of others playing at the same time and only 9999 lines, obviously some are going to get crossed. It doesn't help that the person you're trading with's name is hidden behind the stat screen, so it's easy to assume you connected with your friend.

The first time I tried the feature, I connected to the wrong person, I don't think I need to elaborate more on how bad this is

Playing ultra sun and moon at the same time as sword and shield, and they also have weird cutscenes with flapping mouths and no sounds

I've been saying it for years, but we really didn't complain enough about ultra sun and ultra moon.

as for sword and shield itself, it's really really a slog to get through. My pokemon are invincible no matter how often I switch out team members, it feels like I'm just playing with types and not individual pokemon

There's Marnie's theme, Hop's 2nd battle theme and Battle Tower and then that's pretty much it for me. I think one of the town songs was decent too, the one that sounds like a PMD song.

Better than Sun/Moon where I literally only enjoyed 1 song from it, but still not like the GSC days where like half the OST is incredible.

Here's a weird weird thing regarding the music

I'm in Chirchester and there's really cool ice town music

...but it only plays in the hotel.

Then Bob's Your Uncle, the restaurant that won't let you leave without a good meal that you can't get a meal at, also has it's own unique jam.

Chirchester's music as it is isn't terrible or anything but it's a little safe and atmospheric...

Alright I best the game last night. There are soo many weird flaws and plot issues toward the end so Im going to take this opportunity to say: I really really liked the end game. Once you get past Piers (boy is there a lot to say about that) the game starts moving along at a good clip and you start to face some genuinely challenging battles.

Chairman Rose actually completely decimated my team and I beat him with my last pokemon, and I was forced to use max revives against charizard, killing him with my last pokemon. I'm super super excited to nuzlocke this game now.

Here's another really great thing that turned me almost completely from "this game sucks" to "Hey, it's not bad"

During the league fights when your Pokemon is automatically healed after the fight, I thought this would be a huge issue for Nuzlocking, but it turns out you can still access the PC to release fainted pokemon for your team.

Ok so I should start rounding out these flaws.

First though. Let's talk about that Piers cutscene. Why. Why did they do that.

The best part is we've already had a voice acted punk rock gym ten years ago.

but i think pokemon has perpetually been stuck in an awkward transitional period since (and including) x/y

these games are no exception but i truly believe the wild area is the first thing that has felt like the path forward to something actually modern and new in the series

The Piers thing is probably the only time I'd care about the voice flap thing.

However, the run up to him is so full of old school beat 'em up references and Piers himself is great so I still kind of love the whole area.

The beat em up thing is cool in theory, but its such a slog that it ruins its own flavor. Like when the game pauses and you're shown a close up of the little blinking move forward arrow.

Also the town itself looks so goddamn cool and we still have to battle in the weird "we never modeled this part" void. What a huge waste.

So I started a new game, and I have to say, the intro can be skipped through in record time. Maybe 15 minutes? I also did some grinding since it's a nuzlocke so it's hard to say.
