Just saw it under the 2019 Steam Awards Winners sale. I've never heard of it, looked intriguing and got great reviews. Anyone have thoughts? $22.49.

It's good, kind of clunky but the graphics are wonderful. It's a bit easy and the story takes a long time to get going, but for a walking sim with arbitrary stealth it's not as bad as you'd think.

Played through the first chapter. Peppy, cheery stuff so far.

Watching Dad get his throat slit, tons of family friends and servants get slaughtered, Mom sacrifice herself (for what sure seemed like no real reason) = i sleep

Dog dies = real shit

Yeah it's great. A fun single player adventure with a unique setting. It's one of those action-adventure games that introduces a new mechanic in each level too. I liked the story and characters too.

It could easily pass itself off as a game from Naughty Dog.

It's not the most profound story but it's got feels. And some of the scenes are incredible like the battlefield graveyard portion.I think the voice acting does pretty damn good too.

As someone has said, the controls are a little clunky, but the overall game is still an interesting experience.

Finished Chapter 4. Luring the pig to feed him to the rats... feels bad man :(

Hugo is sort of annoying sometimes but considering you're pretty much permanently chained to a five year old, he's pretty unobtrusive as escort quests go. Voice acting thus far is excellent and the game is fucking gorgeous on ultra.

Through 8 now. Im really enjoying this game! Ive read there are 17 chapters and Im a little worried that might slightly overstay its welcome mechanically, but story wise, its really nice. Digging having my pals around.

Glad you're enjoying it. IMO the length felt pretty ideal. Enough stuff opens up as you go along to keep it fresh. Doesn't overstay its welcome.

Mhm. I think a few of the individual levels feel a hair overlong (that last one I mentioned where you control Hugo felt positively endless) but the overall story and campaign has felt about right.

Ah I know just the one. Yeah that level itself did feel too long for sure. There's probably 1 other part of the game I feel the same about, but that's not bad overall.

i thought it was great, personally. characters were likable enough, there was enough gameplay to feel like it wasn't completely just a movie, and i thought the story was pretty good too.

Still to come or am I past it?

the main problem with the one I mentioned is not only is it long in terms of sheer minutes, but its also basically 100% crouching and hiding under tables with the somewhat suspect stealth detection, and waiting for patrol patterns. No tools, no real puzzles, nothing until you find Beatrice which, like, youre almost done by then.

Still to come iirc

I think it's actually the very next thing you do. Lot of pushing rats around at the castle. Not as bad as that sneaking part, but tedious.

But after that I think the pace returns to normal throughout.

^It sure did. The sequence where Hugo and Nicholas stalk you around was mad creepy. Boss fight there was a little unwieldy, but darn cool.

Halfway through what sure feels like the grand finale RIP Rodrick :(

One thing that has really pleasantly surprised me, given how insanely grim the opening chapter was, is how heartfelt the story is overall and the bond of the friends you make along the way. This little band of plucky kids against an unfathomably dark presence reminds me just a hair of It in that way. I was kinda worried it would just be torture porn, albeit hella ambient torture porn, for the first couple chapters.

Done! Really liked it. Few nitpicks but overall a fun experience with good character work and some really neat ideas. That final battle was a trip.

That said, I was thinking Id try to 100% the game, but seeing that there is no NG+ or unlockables of any sort, Im not sure Im super compelled to play through everything again to pick up some more trinkets. I wanted to get all my upgrades, though! I just wish there was any incentive.

Glad you liked it. I played it 2 months back and enjoyed it as well. It's a good solid game.

As for 100%ing it, I believe there's a chapter select you can use to go back and grab anything you missed, so a full on second playthrough isn't necessary.

Totally agree though on n NG+ being a bummer.

Basically a whole playthrough.

IIRC with the chapter select in this game it actually reloads the chapter with the exact same amount of materials and shit that you had when you first played it.

I liked it. Good atmosphere and it endears itself to the player. Not as good as the year's other plague game - Pathologic, but still worth a look.

It was real good. Dont know if Id go THAT far, but definitely one of my favorite 2019 releases. Itd go behind Sekiro and Luigis Mansion 3 for me, at least.
