The original trilogy? none should even been in the top 100 movies of all time.

Basically in 40 years there have been 3 above average films, a handful of mediocre films, and the rest are absolute dog duty.

Why is the franchise considered so good?

Its good for what it is, dont be dense

Generally speaking, anything at all that has more than one movie is trash

Honestly not really. The first one was cool
cause of the times. Empire was cool cause of the twist. Starting at Return of the Jedi, it just became toys the movie.

i say this as one of the biggest Star Wars fans. But all of it was basically a fluke of how successful it was.

For me it was the universe. All the possibilities of worlds, peoples, ideas.

And ships. I really love Star Wars ships for some reason.

The music is great and the characters are iconic. I like the movies but no, they were never that "good." And PT is only worse than OT due to Jar Jar, kid Anakin, and more bad dialogue than the OT had. Otherwise it's on the same level.

They pioneered visual effects spectacles, I guess.

They have never been the tour de force of writing/directing that some people make them out to be though.

I don't know when the hell it happened, but somewhere along the line it became "bad" to just be a fun, popcorn film so people had to start acting like Star Wars was high art.

Even though, the entire point was to be "modern day" versions of shitty space/adventure serials.

I'd say Empire Strikes Back is one of the better movies ever made, A new hope was groundbreaking with it's costumes and visual effects, ROJ was decent but fell short due to the ewoks subplot

Star Wars perfectly mixed humor, adventure, emotion, world building, and cutting-edge special effects into the kind of movie that will be remembered for all time.

The first two movies are legit. Empire in particular still sets a really high bar for fantasy blockbuster films that has scarcely been surpassed.

RoJ basically cemented it as a franchise built around selling toys more than making a good movie, and the fan base encourages this mentality explicitly.

Massively influential not only for visual effects but also sound design & music. Arguably, world building also.

Plus, the Force is a great idea for 'magic' based around a pantheistic energy source that ties all of existence together.

The Original Trilogy was really that good. The only real problems were the Ewoks (an obvious ploy to make little kids like it) and a few bits of dialogue.

The Prequels had a lot more dialogue issues as Lucas wrote everything by himself & desperately needed someone to reign him in. Jar Jar & little kid Anakin were obvious weak points too.

That said, I'd still take his directing style. The films were great looking, especially if you remember all the impossible to watch, fast-cut, blurry handheld camera garbage of that era.

Empire is legitimately great. there hasn't been a good star wars movie since

It's got its ups and downs. 5 and RO are the only great films, but there are still some competent and fun films in the series, like 4, 6, 3, 7, 9 and Solo.

No. It just benefited from the fact that no much at that point in 1977 had ever really had the scope that SW did. Its actual quality is highly debatable.
