Is there any skills that are just too good to pass up or are there any that are trash and are not worth the points?

Don't forget steel sword for humans and silver sword for monsters. New players often use the wrong sword and can't figure out why their damage is bad.

Don't neglect oils and potions, super useful.

Look up where to buy the Witcher school armor maps. Then pick a set and stick with it.

Get quen alternate sign mode as a priority. It let's you hold down the r2 button, and any hits you get heal you. Its essential to survive longer tougher fights.

Other than that sign powers in general are all great. Aard in particular. I've had fights where I knock down 4 or 5 guys at once, and just walk up and finish off each one. Igni is good too for stunning large groups of guys.

Also Gary should automatically pull out the correct sword. You shouldn't ever have to actually use left or right on the pad unless he glitches out.

Play Gwent and largely ignore the rest.

I just started a new run and plan on actually beating it now. If you're in White Orchard still don't forget to do everything. Purchase all the Gwent cards if that's your thing. Get the decoy card from the bar owner in the first town before you move on because it may disappear.

I am comically bad at Gwent. Probably because I never grew up playing any sort of card games and I just don't have the mindset for it.

Level up Fleet Footed and you don't even have to worry about counters and parries, once it's maxed out you get 100% damage reduction while dodging so for almost all enemies you can just dodge constantly until you get a window to attack. Not the most fun/skilled way to play the game but hey, it gets the job done.

Gwent is very easily broken. Spamming spies wins every time!

Also the AI is really dumb, and will spam all their strongest cards to win just one round. I would often keep playing my weak ones until the AI has spent all their good stuff then just stomp them in the following two rounds.

Just play it. It's not a particualrly complex game and there's not a whole lot of metagame or anything. Just have fun.

i think at some point they updated some of your tourney competition as I got in a few bouts with the computer also spamming spies.
