I hear this complaint sometimes but it would kind of suck tbh. Main characters dying suddenly because of illnesses or accidents. Stories developing then going nowhere. Seemingly important people being introduced only for them to disappear and never be seen again.

I'll take my contrived stories over that any day tbh.

You did that thing where you purposely go to the polar opposite side of the argument and ignore any middle ground.

People don't want realism, they want consistent and cohesive worlds in fiction. They're just dumb and fail at explaining what they want.

I want things to make sense within the rules of that universe and at least be somewhat logical. Like say someone has super speed. They can handwave friction and other physics it's no big deal because it's science fiction. However, it would be frustrating if the speedster rewinded time by running around the Earth to reverse the spin.

People want realism with a side of convenience. Where the story COULD happen, but it's with a lot of unlikely events all syncing up. Each event could easily be believable on it's own. You just gotta give the benefit of the doubt

People want material that emotionally registers as verisimilitudinous, not actual realism. And one day they'll probably stop, because popular aesthetic preferences come and go.

Ugh the real world is stupid and unfair and depressing. You turn on the TV to watch the news and somebody got shot in New York City and some nutcase politician is actually in power somehow.

Let me escape this by turning on the TV to watch a movie where somebody got shot in New York City and some nutcase politician is actually in power somehow.
